Late Rally Falls Just Short In CCAA Opener With S.F. State

CSUMB closes to within two points late in a 60-55 setback

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team nearly dug itself out of a 16–point, second–half deficit before coming up just short in a 60–55 loss to visiting San Francisco State Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB dipped to 3–2 with the loss while SFSU improved to 4–2 overall. It was the CCAA opener for both teams.

Lauryn Pointer (Los Angeles/Serra HS) led CSUMB with 13 points. Sophomore Gigi Israel (San Marcos/Mission Hills HS) added 12 while Mikayla Mabie dished a game–high eight assists. Tierra Snipes posted a 15–point, 11–rebound double–double to lead the Gators.

S.F. State ended the first half on a 13–2 run to break open a tie game and take a 33–22 lead into the lockerroom. The Gators extended their advantage to as many as 16 points in the third quarter before the Otter rally began.

CSUMB closed to within three points at 52–49 on a pair of Emily Perez (Long Beach/St. Anthony HS) free throws with five minutes remaining and then got within two when Perez knocked down a 3–pointer to make it 57–55 with 32 ticks left.

But the Otters would draw no closer as S.F. State made three free throws in the final 29 seconds to put the game away.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Gigi Israel's 3–point attempt didn't find the mark with six seconds remaining in regulation.

MABIE LENDS A HAND… Mikayla Mabie passed a game–high eight assists Saturday against San Francisco State, good for the No. 12 spot on the Otter single–game assist list. Back on Nov. 12 — in a win over Holy Names — Mabie dished 10 dimes, the No. 2 mark in CSUMB history. She becomes just the sixth player in CSUMB history to pass eight or more assists twice and the first to do it since Aubri Smith on Jan. 28 and Nov. 25, 2017.

WELCOME BACK… After missing the first four games of the season, sophomore Emily Perez made her first appearance of 2022–23. She scored seven points with team highs of five rebounds and two steals in 19 minutes off the bench.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Lauryn Pointer 13; REBOUNDS: Mikayla Mabie/Emily Perez/Sarah Shaw 5; ASSISTS: Mikayla Mabie 8; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: Mikayla Mabie/Emily Perez/Samiya Terry 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 3–game homestand by hosting Cal Poly Pomona for the opening game of a CCAA doubleheader Thursday (Dec. 1). Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
