Pointer's Big Game Not Enough vs. Broncos

Lauryn Pointer goes for 26 but Pomona hangs on to win 67-61

SEASIDE, Calif. — Senior guard Lauryn Pointer (Los Angeles/Serra HS) exploded for 26 points, but Cal Poly Pomona went 14-for-15 from the line to hold on for a 67-61 win Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

Cal Poly (5-1, 2-0 CCAA) opened a 12-point lead in the second quarter and CSUMB (3-3, 0-2) spent the rest of the evening nibbling away at the deficit but never could get over the hump. The Otters drew as close as three points at 57-54 on a Pointer 3-pointer two minutes into the fourth quarter, but that was as close as they would get.

Pointer scored 16 of her 26 points in the second half. Senior guard Mikayla Mabie (Riverside/UC Merced) added 14 points and a game-high six assists. Freshman post Abbey Hadsell (Folsom HS) went a perfec t 3-for-3 from the field and scored a season-high eight points.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Donja Payne missed a short jumper with 10 seconds remaining. The Otters got the rebound but without enough time to get the two 3-pointers they needed to force overtime.

ONE OFF HER RECORD… Lauryn Pointer's 26 points were one off her career high of 27 set earlier this season in a win at Fresno Pacific. She also missed by one becoming the third player in Otter history to score 27 or more points in a game twice.

POINTER PERFECT FROM THE LINE… Lauryn Pointer went a perfect 9-for-9 from the free-throw line Thursday versus Cal Poly Pomona. She is the fourth player in Otter history to go 9-for-9 in a game and the first since against Cal Poly Pomona on Dec. 6, 2014. The only player to do better was Peggy Huddleston, who went 10-for-10 in a win over San Jose Christian on Jan. 21, 2003.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Lauryn Pointer 26. REBOUNDS: Abbey Hadsell/Lauryn Pointer 4. ASSISTS: Mikayla Mabie 6. BLOCKS: None. STEALS: Lauryn Pointer 4.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will close their 3-game homestand Saturday when they host Cal State San Bernardino. Tip-off will be at 1 p.m. as the opener of doubleheader action.
