Women Roll Past Holy Names For Second Win

Lauryn Pointer scores 24 as Otters ground Hawks, 81-59

SAN FRANCISCO — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team rode a hot start to its second consecutive win, closing play at the Gator Invitational win an 81–59 victory over Holy Names University Saturday afternoon in The Swamp on the San Francisco State campus.

CSUMB jumps to a 2–0 start for the first time since starting 3–0 in 2013. The 81 points were the most scored by an Otter squad since an 84–69 win over Academy of Art in 2017.

Senior guard Lauryn Pointer (Los Angeles/Serra HS) exploded for 24 points with eight rebounds and six assists. Fellow senior Mikayla Mabie (Riverside/Fresno CC) added a double–double with 13 points and 10 assists while sophomore forward Sarah Shaw (Dana Point/JSerra HS) just missed her own double–double with 12 points and a game–high nine rebounds.

The Otters took control of the game early, opening with an 8–0 run en route to a school–record 24-point first quarter. They led by 11 at the end of the first half, 41–30, and never let the Haqwks get closer than 12 points over the final 20 minutes.

CSUMB extended its lead to as many as 24 points before settling on the 22-point final margin.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Lauryn Pointer knocked down a midrange jumper with 4:12 remaining to give the Otters a 73–52 lead.

TWO AND OH: With wins over Academy of Art and Holy Names, CSUMB has started 2–0 for the first time since the 2013–14 season. It marks the sixth time in program history that the Otters are perfect after two games.

THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING: With apologies to Douglas Adams, the answer to life, the Universe and everything isn't 42, it's 70. with Saturday's 81–59 win over Holy Names University, CSUMB now is 43–6 when scoring 70 or more points since the 2008–09 season. The Otters now have won 16 consecutive games when scoring at least 80 points dating back to the 2005–06 season.

SHE LENDS A HAND, NO MABIES ABOUT IT: Mikayla Mabie just missed matching the CSUMB record for assists in a game when she dished 10 dimes in Saturday's win over Holy Names. That mark ties her for No. 2 all–time behind Alma Lopez, who passed 11 assists against Western Washington on Dec. 18, 2007. The other Otters to pass 10 assists in a game were Stephanie Sack (2015 against Fresno Pacific) and Helen Suarez (2008 against William Jessup).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT: POINTS: Lauryn Pointer 24. REBOUNDS: Sarah Shaw 9. ASSISTS: Mikayla Mabie 10. BLOCKS: Sarah Shaw 1. STEALS: Mikayla Mabie 4.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT: The Otters will continue preconference tournament play with a trip to Fresno for a pair of games against two more Pac West Conference opponents Nov. 18–19. The action begins against host Fresno Pacific Friday (Nov. 18) at 5 p.m.
