Pointer, Shaw Lead Huge Comeback Win In Fresno

Lauryn Pointer scores 27, Shaw has double-double in 64-63 victory

FRESNO, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay overcame an 18–point, second half deficit to post a thrilling 64–63 win over Fresno Pacific at the FPU Crossover Tournament Friday night in FPU's Special Event Center.

Senior guard Lauryn Pointer (Los Angeles/Serra HS) scored 22 of her career–high 27 points in the second half as CSUMB came back from 18 points down with seven minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Sarah Shaw (Dana Point/JSerra HS) posted a 17–point, 10–rebound double–double. Her final point proved to be the game–winner when she knocked down a free throw with 35 seconds remaining to break at 63–63–tie.

The Otters held an early 7–3 lead but it was all Fresno for the ensuing 20 minutes. The Sunbirds built their first double–digit lead midway through the second and, by the time three minutes had elapsed in the second half, they had expanded their advantage to 18 at 46–28.

CSUMB chipped away from the deficit and trimmed Fresno lead to 53–46 by the end of the third.

The Otters stayed within striking distance throughout the fourth, but couldn't catch the Sunbirds until a Pointer free throw knotted the score at 63–63 with 58 seconds left in regulation.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… the Otters successfully defended a Fresno inbounds play under the basket as time expired.

THREE AND OH: With wins over Academy of Art, Holy Names and Fresno Pacific, CSUMB has started 3–0 for the first time since the 2013–14 season. It marks the fifth time in program history that the Otters are perfect after three games.

POINTING THE WAY TO VICTORY: Lauryn Pointer eclipsed her career high with 27 points in Friday's 64–63 win at Fresno Pacific. Her previous high of 25 set last season against Cal Poly Humboldt and Cal State San Bernardino.

20–20 VISION: With 24 points in last Saturday's win over Holy Names and her career–high 27 in Friday's win at Fresno Pacific, Lauryn Pointer posted consecutive 20–point games for the second time in her career. She also turned the trick Feb. 3–5 last season. In fact, including the 2022 season finale, Pointer has scored 20–plus points in three of her last four games.

DOUBLE–DOUBLE TROUBLE: Sarah Shaw posted CSUMB's first double–double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds in Friday's win at Fresno Pacific. It was the third double–double of her career.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT: POINTS: Lauryn Pointer 27. REBOUNDS: Sarah Shaw 10. ASSISTS: Mikayla Mabie 4. BLOCKS: Sarah Shaw 2. STEALS: Kiki Griffin 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT: The Otters will conclude play at the FPU Tournament when they meet Dominican University Saturday at 2 p.m.
