Otters Open New Era With Win Over ArtU

CSUMB rallies for 61–59 victory in season opener

SAN FRANCISCO — The Cal State Monterey bay women's basketball team opened its Sarah Hopkins-Chery era in style with a 61–59 win over Academy of Art University in the opening game of the Gator Invitational Friday afternoon in The Swamp on the San Francisco State campus.

Newcomer Gigi Israel (San Marcos/UC Merced) led three Otters in double figures with 15 points. Sierra College transfer Kiki Griffin (San Jose/Pleasant Grove HS) added 14 points and a game–high eight rebounds.

The Otters fell behind early when ArtU opened the game with an 11–2 run. CSUMB righted the ship, but couldn't get over the hump until Isreal knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the fourth quarter to give the Otters their first lead at 50–49. The lead changed hands four times over the next four minutes until Griffin buried a 16-foot jumper to break a 59–59 tie with 1:27 remaining.

The Otter defense clamped down from that point, forcing turnovers on the final two Urban Knight possessions to seal the victory.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Returning for its sixth season, The Game Was Statistically Over When… segment uses the Bill James formula to calculate the exact point in the game when the winning team had a lead that statistically could not be overcome. In Friday's win over Academy of Art, that moment came with two seconds remaining when Amelia Smith stole an Alisha Smith pass.

FOR OPENERS: With Friday's 61–59 win over Academy of Art, the Otters snapped a 7–game skid in seasons openers dating back to 2014. The Otters now are 8–11 in season openers in 18+ seasons at the NCAA Division II level.

FOR ROAD OPENERS: With Friday's 61–59 win over academy of Art, CSUMB is 4–10 all time when opening on the road since moving to the NCAA Division II level.

FOR COACH OPENERS: CSUMB coaches now have compiled a 4–4 record in their eight debutante performances. The Otter coaches who began their CSUMB careers 1–0 are:
  • Dave Carmichael (d. Westmont College 65–60 on Nov. 5, 1999)
  • Renee Jimenez (d. Univ. of Mary 95–87 on Nov. 15, 2008)
  • Kerri Nakamoto (d. Dixie State 98–70 on Nov. 9, 2013)
  • Sarah Hopkins-Chery (d. Academy of Art 61–59 on Nov. 11, 2022)
FROM WAY DOWNTOWN: Gigi Israel become the 11th player in CSUMB to make five or more 3-pointers in a game when she went 5-for-9 from long range in Friday's 61–59 win over Academy of Art. The last Otter to do it was Serena toney, who made five against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Dec. 21, 2019.

TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK: Credit Friday's win over Academy of Art to CSUMB's ability to take care of the rock with the game on the line. The Otters turned the ball over just 12 times in the game, including just three turnovers in the second half. It marked the fewest turnovers by an Otter team since they committed 10 TOs at Cal State San Marcos on Jan. 4, 2020.

LIVING IN THE 60s: CSUMB's 61 points in Friday's win over Academy of Art were their most in a road game since a  67–58 win at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Feb. 8, 2020.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT: POINTS: Gigi Israel 15. REBOUNDS: Kiki Griffin 8. ASSISTS: Jordan Beaumont/Gigi Israel/Mikayla Mabie/Lauryn Pointer 2. BLOCKS: Lauryn Pointer 2. STEALS: Kiki Griffin 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT: The Otters will conclude play at the Gator Invitational Saturday when the face Holy Names University. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
