Otters Send Seniors Off In Style with Sweep

Otters down Chico State 25-21, 25-19, 25-20 in final home match

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team sent its senior class off in style Saturday evening with a Senior Night sweep of Chico State in The Kelp Bed. The Otters took the match 25–21, 25–19, 25–20.

It was the final home match for six Otter seniors: Bella Carrion, Sam Chavez, Aly Fullbright, Mollin Helfrich, Lauren Reeves and Isabella Ultsch. Each of the them had a hand in CSUMB's fifth sweep of 2022.

Ultsch, Reeves and Helfrich combined for 22 of CSUMB's 35 kills and five of its eight blocks. Chavez and Carrion combined for 16 digs while Fullbright quarterbacked the offense with 24 assists while adding a pair of aces.

Chico held leads early in the first two sets, but the Otters rallied each time. A Helfrich kill kick started an 11–3 Otter run that turned a 12–8 deficit into a 19–15 lead in the first. Two more Helfrich kills were the catalysts for a closing 8–2 run that broke a 17–17 tie in the second.

The Otters never trailed in the third set, racing to a 17–9 lead en route to the sweep.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHENMollin Helfrich finished a Wildcat overpass to give the Otters match point.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… Sweeps have been incredibly rare in the 36–match history between CSUMB and Chico State. In fact, since the Otters became NCAA Division II eligible in the 2007 season, Saturday's match was just the seventh sweep by either side and just the second by the Otters. By contrast, the team have gone the full five sets 14 times over that span, including a 5–setter in Chico earlier this season.

HOME SWEET HOME… Saturday's sweep of Chico State ensures that the Otters will finish with a winning home record (7–5) for the second consecutive season under Head Coach Courtney Materazzi. CSUMB is 12–7 (.631) at home during her tenure.

GOING OUT ON HIGH NOTE… The Otters have won both home finales under Courtney Materazzi. It marks the first time since the 2007–08 seasons that the Otters finished their home slate with victories in consecutive seasons.

THE DOUBLE DIGIT CLUB… The Otters earned their 10th victory of the season with Saturday's win over Chico State. The Otters have posted double–digit victories in five of the last six seasons, including both seasons under Courtney Materazzi.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Lauren Reeves 13.0; KILLS: Lauren Reeves 10; BLOCKS: Mollin Helfrich 6; ACES: Aly Fullbright/Kaylie Honberger/Isabella Ultsch 2; DIGS: Sam Chavez 13.

THE LAST WORD… "Great night in The Kelp Bed tonight! The Chico match is always a battle and to come out on top, with everyone leaving it all on the floor, was fantastic! Thank you to the fans, and congratulations to all of our seniors—what a great last night for each of you." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for the final two matches of 2022, beginning with a rematch against No. 14 Cal State San Bernardino on Friday (Nov. 4). The Otters defeated the Coyotes for the first time ever when the met in The Kelp Bed on Sept. 10.
