ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — A big night for sophomore Savanna Maker (Salinas HS) wasn't enough to get Cal State Monterey Bay over the hump as Sonoma State took a 25–22, 25–18, 15–25, 25–16 decision from the Otters Thursday night in The Wolves Den.

Maker finished with a career–high nine blocks and hit .429 with seven kills against just one error to lead CSUMB with 14 point. Senior setter Aly Fullbright (Huntington Beach Edison HS) added 30 assists and a career–high eight kills Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) led the backline with 14 digs.

CSUMB stayed close in the first set, but Sonoma took control of the match by jumping to a big early lead in the second. The Otters turned the tables in the third, however, extending the match with an easy win of their own.

As it turned out, the Otter momentum was short lived. The Seawolves raced to a 7–2 lead to open the fourth set and CSUMB never got closer than four points th rest of the way.

CSUMB concludes its current 4–match road trip with a visit to Cal Poly Humboldt Saturday afternoon. The Otters return to The Kelp Bed for their final home matches of 2022 Oct. 28–29.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a pair of Kayden Young service aces capped a short Sonoma run that put the Seawolves up 20–7 in the fourth set.

'TIS BETTER TO GIVE AND RECEIVE… Not only did Aly Fullbright pass a team–leading 30 assists Thursday at Sonoma State, she also put down a career–high eight kills. They were the most kills by an Otter setter since Erica Chapa collected nine in a win over Chico State on Oct. 5, 2018.

MAKER ON THE BLOCK… Savanna Maker's nine blocks Thursday at SOnoma State were a personal record and the second most ever in a four set match by an Otter. Christine Rickets owns the Otter record with an unheard of 16 blocks in a win over (then) Cal State Stanslaus on Oct. 8, 2005.

MATERAZZI HEARING FOOTSTEPS… CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi can be excused if she's hearing footsteps as the 2022 season approaches its final act. Senior libero Sam Chavez moved ever closer to her on the Otter career digs list Thursday night. Chavez now has 779 digs and needs 28 to pass Materazzi for 12th on that list. At her current pace, Chavez will catch her during the CSUMB home final versus Chico State next Saturday.
