Otters Win A Wild One At Humboldt

CSUMB jumps to 2-0 lead than hangs on to win in five

ARCATA, Calif. — After cruising to its quickest 2–0 lead of the season, Cal State Monterey Bay had to muster everything ounce of energy it possessed to hold off a spirited Cal Poly Humboldt senior night rally for a 25–15, 25–10, 20–25, 22–25, 16–14 win Saturday evening in Lumberjack Arena.

Senior Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS) and Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) led four Otters in double figures with 15 kills apiece. Both outsider hitters served four aces as well.

CSUMB saw several starters miss the match due to injury and illness, but that didn't stop the Otters from getting off to a blazing start, allowing a total of just 25 points to win the first two sets easily. Humboldt found life in the third set, however, when a pair of Mina Barajas kills bookended a 5–0 run that broke a 20–20 tie and extended the match.

The fourth frame set the table for the fantastic finish. CSUMB overcame a 7–1 deficit to start the set to knot the score at 11–11. The teams then played through nine ties and four leads changes over the final 25 points, with Humboldt staying alive to force the deciding fifth set.

The fifth set provided even more drama as the Lumberjacks quickly erased CSUMB's 5–2 start to take a 7–5 lead. Like a pair of heavyweight boxers looking for the knockout punch, the teams traded sides outs down the stretch. A pair of Honberger kills set up two match points for CSUMB. Her final attack of the night forced a Lumberjack blocking error at 15–14 to secure the hard-fought victory for the Otters.

In addition to Reeves and Honberger, Mikayla Nolte (Long Beach Wilson HS) and Savanna Maker (Salinas HS) added 11 and 10 kills respectively. Nolte led the net defense with three blocks while Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) led the back row with 16 digs.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a Kaylie Honberger attack in transition forced a blocking error from Else Kalar on match point.

QUAD DOUBLES… Led by Lauren Reeves (15 kills), Kaylie Honberger (14), Mikyala Nolte (11) and Savanna Maker (10), the Otters placed four attackers in double figures for the third time this season. The other two occasions they turned the trick were versus Wilmington University (Sept. 2) and at Chico State (Oct. 29).

HEARING FOOTSTEPS… With 30 digs this weekend — including 16 Saturday at Cal Poly Humboldt, Sam Chavez moved to within 12 digs of passing Courtney (Taubert) Materazzi for the No. 12 spot on the Otter career digs list. Chavez will enter play next weekend with 795 career digs. Her head coach sits at 806.

ROAD SWEET ROAD… Saturday was CSUMB's eighth win of the season but its first true road victory of 2022. CSUMB also has a pair of neutral site wins this season, both in Colorado.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Lauren Reeves 21.0. KILLS: Kaylie Honberger/Lauren Reeves 15. BLOCKS: Mikayla Nolte 3. ACES: Kaylie Honberger/Lauren Reeves 4. ASSISTS: Aly Fullbright 45. DIGS: Sam Chavez 16.

THE LAST WORD… "Two teams who went in head strong tonight, so to come out with the win feels solid. We had to move some players around this week and they all stepped up to the plate — which showed a lot of drive. Both pins and middles really showed up and in times of need." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of The Kelp Bed for their final two home matches of 2022 next weekend. The action kicks off with a visit from Stanislaus State Friday (Oct. 28), First serve is set for 5 p.m.
