Big Comeback Falls Short At East Bay

Pioneers hold on late; Reeves, Helfrich finish in double figures

HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got up off the mat after a glacially slow start, but host Cal state East Bay held on late to thwart the Otter comeback in a 25–12, 25–15, 24–26, 25–22 decision Saturday night in Pioneer Gym.

Seniors Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS) and Mollin Helfrich (Pinole/Salesian Prep) both finished in double figures for the second consecutive match with 12 and 11 kills respectively. Sophomore Mikayla Nolte (Long Beach Wilson HS) added eight kills while Aly Fullbright (Huntington Beach/Edison HS) passed a season–high 34 assists.

Kaila Uota (Salinas HS) and Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) led the defense with 21 and 20 digs respectively. For Uota, the 21 digs marked a collegiate career high.

East Bay jumped to huge leads in the first two sets, appearing to take firm control of the match. The Otters turned the tables in the third, however, racing to a big lead of their own before holding off a late Pioneer rally.

Things got interesting in a tight fourth set that saw 11 ties and seven lead changes. CSUMB held its last lead at 19–18 and the match was tied as late as 22–22 before East Bay scored the final three points to secure the victory.

CSUMB remains on the road to complete its current 4–match roadtrip next weekend in Northern California. The Otters will play at Sonoma State Thursday (Oct. 21) and at Cal Poly Humboldt Saturday (Oct. 23) before returning to The Kelp Bed for their final home matches of 2022.
