LOS ANGELES — Cal State Monterey Bay Bay's best CCAA start ever hit a cold front Thursday night as a frigid shooting first half allowed Cal State L.A. enough breathing room to earn an 85–78 upset in the CSULA University Gym.
CSUMB (8–5, 7–3 CCAA) shot just 2–for–19 (10.5 percent) from behind the arc in the first half as the Golden Eagles built a 38–29 lead at the break. The Otters caught L.A. at 54–54 midway through the second half, but a late 12–4 run allowed the Golden Eagles to ease away in the waning minutes.
Senior guard
Jordan May (Troutdale, Ore.) led all scorers with 21 points for CSUMB. Junior forward
Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Australia) added 10 points and a team–high six rebounds.
The Otters close their 2–game Southern California trip with a visit to No. 6 ranked Cal State San Marcos Saturday. CSUMB returns home to host Humboldt State Feb. 2 in The Kelp Bed.
