Otters Can’t Sustain Hot Start As Stanislaus Holds On For 60–50 Win

Emily Perez leads CSUMB with 13 points, four assists

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team got off to its best start of the season but couldn't sustain the momentum in a 60–50 loss to Stanislaus State Thursday evening in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB got 13 points from freshman Emily Perez (Long Beach/St. Anthony HS) and a game–high eight rebounds from fellow freshman Rayshanti McNeal Price (Lancaster HS). But Stanislaus guards Liliana Marques (19) and Taylor Pilot (18) combined to score 37 of the Warriors 60 points, and that proved too much to overcome.

The Otters started out on fire, scoring a season–high 20 points in the first quarter to open a 20–14 lead. But their shooting cooled off in each of the next three quarters, eventually going from 47.1 percent in the first to 23.1 percent in the fourth.

CSUMB led for most of the first half until the Warriors rallied late to take a 33–30 lead into intermission. The Otters then went on a 7–minute scoring drought as Stanislaus completed a 22–5 run to take 44–32 lead midway though the third.

CSUMB regained its footing at that point, but couldn't find away to retake the lead as Stanislaus kept its advantage between six and 13 points for the duration.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Taylor Pilot made a free throw to give Stanislaus a 57–47 lead with 34 seconds remaining.

BACK WHERE SHE BELONGS… After seeing her streak of scoring in doubles figures snapped at eight games last week against Cal State Dominguez Hills, freshman Emily Perez jumped right back on the horse with a team–leading 13 Thursday night against Stanislaus State. She now has scored in double figures in nine of her 11 collegiate games.

PEREZ LENDS A HAND… In addition to leading the Otters with 13 points Thursday night versus Stanislaus State, Emily Perez led the team by passing a season–high four assists.

A THIEF IN THE NIGHT PART I… UC Riverside transfer Lauryn Pointer collected a career–high five steals Thursday night versus Stanislaus State. Her previous high was three against Dominican (Nov. 19) and Cal Poly SLO (Feb. 21, 2019 while at UCR).

A THIEF IN THE NIGHT, PART II… Lauryn Pointer became the first Otter to collect five steals in a game since Katie FitzGerald turned the trick at Cal State L.A. on Feb. 6, 2020.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Emily Perez 13; REBOUNDS: Rayshanti McNeal Price 8; ASSISTS: Emily Perez 4; BLOCKS: Sarah Shaw 2; STEALS: Lauryn Pointer 5.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their weekend homestand by hosting Chico State Saturday (Jan. 22). Tip-off will be at 1 p.m. as the opening game of men's/women's doubleheader action.
