Otters Can’t Shake Off The Rust In Loss To Toros

Dominguez Hills pulls away in the fourth for 73–46 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team hadn't played in more than a month when it took the court for the first time since Dec. 11 Saturday against Cal State Dominguez Hills. In fact, it had been longer than that since the last time the Otters could go 5–on–5 at practice, such has been the disruption caused by COVID.

The rust showed as the visiting Toros were able to pull away in the second half to earn a 73–46 win in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB trailed by just three at the end of the first quarter, 17–14, and by 11 at the half, 34–23. The Otters kept the deficit manageable in the third but Dominguez stepped on the gas in the fourth to put the game away.

Freshman guard Frances Potts (Carson/Warren HS) led the Otters with 13 points. Fellow freshman Emily Perez (Long Beach/St. Anthony HS) added nine points and a team–leading six rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… an Aurin Isaacson 3–pointer gave the Toros a 64–44 lead with 4:07 remaining.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END… Freshman Emily Perez saw her streak of scoring in double digits end at eight games with nine points Saturday versus Dominguez Hills. It marked the first time she didn't reach double digits since the season opener at Academy of Art on Nov. 13.

NO ONE SAW THAT COMING… A big part of the Toro victory was an unusually hot shooting day from long range. The Toros began the day shooting just 26.5 percent from beyond the arc and coming off their three worst shooting games of the season (all under 20 percent). Led by Aurin Isaacson's 5–for–10 afternoon, CSUDH shot a season–best 7–for–17 (41.2 percent)—their best effort from range since Nov. 9, 2019—Saturday in The Kelp Bed.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Frances Potts 13; REBOUNDS: Emily Perez 6; ASSISTS: Four Otters 2; BLOCKS: Liz Cruz/Lauryn Pointer 1; STEALS: Sarah Shaw 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 3–game homestand by hosting Stanislaus State Thursday (Jan. 20). The women will tip–off at 5:30 p.m. as the opening game of doubleheader action.
