Otters Run Win Streak To Three With Saturday Sweep

CSUMB beats ArtU in four and Holy Names in five

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — It had to go the distance to do it, but the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team ran its win streak to three games with by sweeping a pair of matches Saturday afternoon in Dominican University's Conlon Center. The Otters picked up a 25–22, 17–25, 25–16, 25–22 win over Academy of Art in an early match than held off a late rally by Holy Names to beat the Hawks 25–17, 18–25, 25–20, 22–25, 15–11.

Saturday featured multiple Otter heroes. Senior Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) posted double–figure kills in both matches, finishing the day with 28, while junior Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) set a career high for the second consecutive day with 17 kills in the win over Holy Names.

The adjustment to middle blocker for junior Lauren Reeves also continued to show promise. The junior from Atascadero's Templeton High school posted a career–high six blocks in the win over ArtU and a career–high 10 kills in the win over Holy Names.

The path to victory in both contests came from different directions. In the win over the Urban Knights, CSUMB never trailed after dropping the second set. Against Holy Names, however, the Otters needed late runs to pull out both the third and fifths sets.

THE ARTU MATCH WAS OVER WHENAbby Knapp broke a 22–22 tie in the fourth set with a kill then teamed with Lauren Reeves on a block to set up the only match point CSUMB would need.

THE HOLY NAMES MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Kaylie Honberger and Lauren Reeves ended a final Hawk rally with consecutive kills to set up and knock down match point.

TOURNEY TIME IS OTTER TIME… The Otters have loved playing in regular season tournaments over the past several seasons. After going 3–1 this weekend, CSUMB is now 19–7 in regular season tournament play dating back to the 2016 season.

ANOTHER DOUBLE–DOUBLE FOR TOBIN… Jenna Tobin recorded her third double–double in four matches this season with 14 kills and 14 digs in the win over Holy Names.

SHE'S ACES… Kaylie Honberger posted a career–high four aces in Saturday's win over Academy of Art. She had previously matched her career high with three aces in the season–opener at Fresno Pacific.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jenna Tobin 33.5; KILLS: Jenna Tobin 29.0; BLOCKS: Lauren Reeves 8; ACES: Kaylie Honberger 4; DIGS: Sam Chavez 32.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue preconference tournament play next weekend when they head to The City to play Holy Names and Academy of Art again on Day 1 of the Gator/Seawolf Classic Friday, Sept. 10.
