Otters Split On Day 1 In San Francisco

CSUMB sweeps Academy of Art, drops tight match with Holy Names

SAN FRANCISCO — Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball split a pair of sweeps to open play at the San Francisco State Tournament Friday in The Swamp. CSUMB took a 26–24, 25–23, 25–16 victory from Academy of Art before dropping three tights sets to Holy Names University, 30–28, 27–25, 25–21.

Outside hitters Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) and Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) each posted double–figure kills in both matches to lead the Otter offense. Tobin finished with 27 kills, including a season–high 17 against Holy Names, while Honberger added 24, including a match–high 14 in the win over ArtU.

Both matches were much tighter than the eventual sweeps would lead fans not in attendance to believe. The Otters had to rally back from 7–1 and 15–10 deficits to win the first set then hold off a late challenge in the second before winning going away in the third against ArtU.

Against Holy Names, CSUMB staved off five set points in the opener before HNU saved two of its own in the second. The Hawks then overcame a 12–6 Otter lead in the third set to complete their sweep.

THE ACADEMY OF ART MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… three consecutive Kaylie Honberger kills keyed a 6–0 run that gave the Otters an insurmountable 20–9 lead in the third set.

THE HOLY NAMES MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Ayanna Barham served five consecutive points in a 6–0 run that turned a 13–10 Otter lead into a 16–13 Hawk lead. CSUMB never got closer than two points the rest of the way.

OTTERS NEARLY HIT .400… The Otters enjoyed one of the top attacking matches in program history in the sweep of Academy of Art. CSUMB hit .394 (45–8–94), the second best attack percentage ever by an Otter team. The only time they were better they hit .606 in a sweep of Holy Names on Sept. 9, 2017.

TOP 20 TOBIN… Jenna Tobin's 17 kills versus Holy Names ranks No. 14 on the Otter all–time list for kills in a 3–set match. Tobin's personal best for three sets is 18 kills against Concordia–Portland on Aug. 13, 2018. That mark is tied for No. 9 on the Otter 3–set list.

HONBERGER IS ACES… In addition to her big day hitting, Kaylie Honberger also enjoyed a strong day at the service line with four aces in the win over Academy of Art. Those four rank tied for No. 8 in Otter history for aces in a 3–set match. FYI, Jenna Tobin shares that spot with four aces in a sweep of Seattle Pacific on Sept. 12, 2019.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jenna Tobin 31.5; KILLS: Jenna Tobin 27; BLOCKS: Mollin Helfrich 6; ACES: Kaylie Honberger 5; DIGS: Sam Chavez 20.

THE LAST WORD… "Overall it was a great day of volleyball. Our serve and pass game continues to develop and our pins were particularly efficient and terminal in this mornings match. We identified key areas of growth as a team following the Holy Names match and I'm excited to watch us put those defensive and team oriented goals in motion tomorrow morning.." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude play at SFSU Saturday with matches against Dominican (10 a.m.) and Chico State (5 p.m.).
