Otters Enter CCAA Play On A Roll with Wins Over Dominican, Chico

Otters set several records Saturday while improving to 6–2 overall

SAN FRANCISCO — Cal State Monterey Bay shook over Friday's split with a pair of strong wins Saturday to close play at the San Francisco State Classic. The Otters easily dispatched Dominican University in record–setting fashion, 25–16, 25–11, 25–9 To begin the day. They finished the day by setting another record while taking day traditionally tough Chico State 25–23, 25–27, 25–19, 25–14.

More on the records below.

Juniors Abby Knapp (Atwater HS/Gonzaga) and Mollin Helfrich (Pinole/Salesian Prep) led the offense by posting double–figures kills on both matches. Knapp finished the day with a team–high 23 total kills while Helfrich chipped in 21. Senior Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) added 19 kills, including a match–high 11 win the win over Dominican.

Junior Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS) etched her name in Otter history by matching Ashlynne Armstrong's school record of seven aces in the win over Chico State.

Senior setter Sophia Torres (Temecula/Chaparral HS) led an efficient attack that hit .354 for the day by passing 75 total assists, including 39 in the win over Chico State.

In the back row, the Otters were so efficient that they simply didn't need to dig a ton of balls. Tobin was the only Otter to finish in double figures in either game by posting 10 against Dominican.

THE DOMINICAN MATCH WAS OVER WHENSophia Torres served nine consecutive points to open the third setting, quickly ending any Domincan comeback hopes.

THE CHICO MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a Mollin Helfrich kill extended the Otter lead to 10–3 early in the fourth set. The Wildcats never got closer the five points the rest of the way.

OTTERS ON A ROLL… The Otters will enter CCAA play next week with a 6–2 overall record. That matches the best preconference record in program history. CSUMB previously started 6–2 in 2012, 2013 and 2017.

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO? By holding Dominican to nine points in the third set Saturday, the Otters tied the CSUMB record for fewest points allowed in a set since the NCAA went to 25–point scoring in the 2008 season. The Otters previously allowed just nine points in sweeps of Holy Names (2017) and William Jessup (2008).

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO, PART II… The 36 points allowed by the Otters matches the second fewest point they've ever allowed in a match. The record is 32 points set in a sweep of Holy Names on Sept. 9, 2017. They also allowed just 36 points in the 2008 sweep of William Jessup mentioned above.

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO, CHICO EDITION… The 14 points allowed by the Otters in the fourth set of their win over Chico State Saturday marks the fewest points they've ever allowed to the Wildcats since the NCAA went to 25–point scoring in 2008. The previous low was 16 points (2013 and 2017).

THIS TIME, THE OTTERS HIT .400… The Otters hit .400 in a match for just the second time in program history when they went 44–7–82 (.451) in Saturday's sweep of Dominican University. That mark ranks No. 2 on the Otter all–time list, surpassing the .394 they hit in Friday's win over Academy of Art. The only time they were better they hit .606 in a sweep of Holy Names on Sept. 9, 2017.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jenna Tobin 26.0; KILLS: Abby Knapp 23; BLOCKS: Mollin Helfrich 9; ACES: Lauren Reeves 8; DIGS: Jenna Tobin 16.

THE LAST WORD… "Our game behind the service line continues to improve, with Lauren and Alexa having great runs tonight in particular. Soph (Sophia Torres) made distribution on offense a priority today and it showed. The biggest take away was our ability to play for each other, stay involved on and off the court and use the information we get as the match continues." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters open conference play with a trip to Cal State San Marcos Thursday (Sept. 16). First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
