Otters Fall In CCAA Opener At San Marcos

Tobin, Knapp record double–figure kills for CSUMB

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Strong hitting nights from senior Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) and junior Abby Knapp (Atwater HS/Gonzaga) weren't enough to stop host Cal State San Marcos from taking a 25–20, 25–22, 25–21 decision from Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday night in the CSUSM Sports Center.

The match was the CCAA opener for both CSUMB (6–3 overall) and San Marcos (4–3).

Tobin led all attackers with 12 kills Thursday, her eighth time in double figures in nine matches this season. Knapp reached double figures for the seventh time.

All three sets were tightly contested. The teams were tied at 20 in the opener before the Cougars scored the final five points to secure the early lead. The Otters led 18–17 in the second before a late San Marcos surge allowed the Cougars to pull that one out as well.

Trailing 19–13 in the third, the Otters rallied to within 21–19, but that is as close as they would get.

In addition to Tobin and Knapp, Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) collected a team–leading 15 digs while Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS) led the net defense with four blocks. Tobin and Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) each served a pair of aces.

CSUMB concludes its season–opening 10–match roadtrip Saturday night with a Battle of the Bays showdown at Cal State East Bay.
