Round One Of The Battle of the Bays Goes To CSUMB

Otters defeat East Bay in four sets; Abby Knapp leads with 15 kills

HAYWARD, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team fired the first salvo in the annual "Battle of the Bays" competition with a 25–23, 25–23, 17–25, 25–22 win over Cal State East Bay Saturday night in Pioneer Gym.

More than just the Battle of the Bays, Saturday's match featured a battle of former Otter teammates in CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi and East Bay Head Coach Kim (Sordello) Lambert. The pair played together as teammates at CSUMB in the mid 2000s. Saturday was their first meeting as collegiate coaches.

"The Battle of the Bays is always fun, but it was especially great to be on a volleyball court with a fellow alum and friend in Kim," says Materazzi. "I have so much respect for her and what's she's spent time building. Add it to the list of why it's great to be back home at CSUMB."

Junior opposite Abby Knapp led three Otters in double figures with 15 kills. Middle blocker Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS) chipped in a career–high 14 kills. Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) added 10 kills and a career–high 16 digs for her second double–double of 2021.

Libero Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) also had 16 digs to lead the Otter back row.

The match was every bit as tight as the final scores indicated, featuring 31 ties and 11 lead changes. East Bay managed to save a set point in all three of it's losses, but the Otters left themselves just enough margin each time to take care of business.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHENLauren Reeves' career–high 14th kill on match point extinguished the final East Bay rally.

BATTLE OF THE BAYS… The Battle of the Bays is an annual competition between CSUMB and CSUEB for Bay Area supremacy. The schools compete for points in head–to–head conference competition with each of their 13 common sports vying for four points apiece. Saturday's Otter win was the first skirmish in this season's Battle, giving CSUMB a 2–0 lead. They'll meet again on the volleyball court for two more points on Nov. 12 in Seaside.

TORRES JOINS THE 1K CLUB… Senior setter Sophia Torres passed 42 assists in Saturday's win over East Bay to go over 1,000 assists for her career (1,005). She is the seventh player in Otter history to surpass 1,000 career assists.

END OF THE ROAD… The Otters ended their season–opening 10–match roadtrip with Saturday night's win over East Bay. CSUMB returns home for the first time since the 2019 season with a 7–3 overall record (1–1 CCAA)

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Abby Knapp 17.0; KILLS: Abby Knapp 15; BLOCKS: Abby Knapp 3; ACES: Alex Blunt/Sam Chavez/Kaylie Honberger/Lauren Reeves 1; DIGS: Sam Chavez/Kaylie Honberger 16.

THE LAST WORD… ""We really had to fight this one out. East Bay moves the ball around well offensively and is very quick. I loved our intention behind the service line to put them out of system. This match came down to making plays in the right moments—which showed a lot of composure on our end. I'm excited to see our middles continue to increase their offensive opportunities.." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to The Kelp Bed for the first time since 2019 when they host perennial CCAA power Cal State L.A Friday, Sept. 24. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
