Otters Find Their Sea Legs, Get Materazzi Her First CSUMB Win

CSUMB dominates final three sets to upend Dominican University in four

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Career victory No. 131 certainly will hold a special place in Courtney Materazzi's heart. That's because it's also victory No. 1 in her coaching career at Cal State Monterey Bay, her alma mater.

After dropping a close first set, Materazzi's Otters dominated host Dominican University for a 22–25, 25–15, 25–18, 25–15 win Friday night in the Conlon Center. The win lifts CSUMB to 1–1 on the season.

CSUMB hit a sizzling .338 for the match, led by a 16–1–25 night from junior opposite Abby Knapp (Atwater HS/Gonzaga). Junior outside hitter Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) enjoyed the second best hitting night of her career, tying her career high with 15 kills while hitting .367.

Senior outside hitter Jenna Tobin (Gregori HS) chipped in her second double–double in as many nights with 15 kills and 12 digs.

The Otters couldn't hold an 18–12 lead in the opening set as Dominican rallied late for the win. But that all changed when junior setter Aly Fullbright (Huntington Beach/Edison HS) got fellow junior Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS) involved early in the second set.

Reeves hammered home four of her seven kills in a 12–5 CSUMB run that turned a 5–5 tie into a 17–10 Otter lead. The Otters led for all but three points for the balance of the match.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… an Aly Fullbright kill and an Alexa Blunt (Napa HS) ace bookended a 8–1 run that gave the Otters an 11–5 lead early in the fourth set. Dominican never got closer than three points the rest of the way.

DOUBLE–DOUBLE TROUBLE… With 15 kills and 12 digs in Friday's win at Dominican University, Jenna Tobin opened the season with consecutive double–doubles for the first time in her collegiate career. The 2–time All–CCAA performer had 16 kills and 12 digs in Thursday's opener at Fresno Pacific.

FULLBRIGHT LENDS A HAND (50 OF THEM)… Junior setter Aly Fullbright posted a career–high 50 assists in Friday's win at Dominican University. That mark ranks No. 4 in the Otter record book for assists in a 4–set match. Sophia Torres and Kelsey Johnston hold the record at 56.

TOP 10 OTTERS… CSUMB's team attack percentage of .338 (65–16–145) ranks No. 10 on the Otter all–time list for attack percentage in a match. It's CSUMB's highest mark since hitting .340 in a win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sept. 27, 2019.
