Fast Start Not Enough As Otters Drop Opener

Host Fresno Pacific rallies for opening night win in four sets

FRESNO, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team took the court for the first time since Nov. 16, 2019 when it traveled to the Special Events Center to take on host Fresno Pacific University Thursday evening.

A fast start wasn't enough to get Courtney Materazzi a win in her first match on the Otter bench as FPU rallied for an 18–25, 26–24, 25–15, 25–19 win.

CSUMB got 18 kills from newcomer Abby Knapp (Atwater/Gonzaga) and 16 from senior Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS). Tobin completed a double–double with 12 digs while Knapp contributed a team–four blocks.

CSUMB led for virtually the entire first set to take the early lead. A taut second set saw the Otters save a pair of set points before Fresno survived to even the match.

The Sunbirds pulled away early in the third set to take control. The Otters raced to a 6–1 lead in the fourth, but a methodical 11–5 run allowed Fresno to finally pull ahead at 12–11 and the Otters never regained the lead.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… A Makena Ogas kill snapped a 13–13 tie in the fourth set for FPU. That sparked a 5–0 run that gave the Sunbirds control for the duration.

THE 600 CLUB… The CSUMB volleyball 600–kill club added its 11th member Thursday night when Jenna Tobin's 16 kills at Fresno Pacific brought her career total to 601. Tobin needs 36 more kills to pass Melanie Lashbrook for the No. 10 spot on the Otter career kills list.

SHE CAN DIG IT… Though well short of her own CSUMB record of 35 digs in a 4–set match, junior libero Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) got her second collegiate season off to a strong start with a match–high 20 digs Thursday night.

TOBIN MAKES HER POINT… Jenna Tobin vaulted three places up the Otter career points list Thursday night. Her 17 points give her 676.0 for her career, moving her above Kerri Sudarsana (663.0), Amber Tygart (661.0) and Jamie Weiler (660.5) into the No. 11 spot. This time, she'll have some work to do to catch Melanie Lashbrook, who holds the No. 10 spot with 789.5 points.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Abby Knapp 20; KILLS: Abby Knapp 18; BLOCKS: Abby Knapp/Kea Veenendaal 4; ACES: Kaylie Honberger 3; DIGS: Sam Chavez 20.

THE LAST WORD… "Our serve and pass game was a big strength tonight. Overall we learned a lot and are ready to grow and adjust through the rest of this weekend. I look forward to watching us commit to our offensive intent and own our growth tomorrow." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head north to continue play at the Northern California Crossover when they face Dominican University at 8 p.m. in the Conlon Center on the Dominican campus.
