Otters Come Up Just Short Against CCAA Favorites

Lauryn Pointer scores team season–high 20 but San Marcos hangs on, 76–70

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay's best effort of the season pushed CCAA preseason favorite Cal State San Marcos to the brink before the Cougars held on for a 76–70 win Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

Senior guard Lauryn Pointer (Los Angeles/UC Riverside) scored a team season–high 20 points and freshman guard Frances Potts (Carson/Warren HS) added a career–high 15 to pace the Otter offense. Freshman center Sarah Shaw (Dana Point/JSerra HS) nearly recorded her second double–double, finishing with nine points and a game–high 11 rebounds.

CSUMB kept things interesting until a San Marcos run late in the third quarter helped the Cougars build a 21–point lead at 67–46, their biggest of the night, early in the fourth.

But the Otters kept chipping away, pulling to within five at 71–66 on a Potts 3–pointer with 41 seconds remaining. The teams essentially traded buckets the rest of the way, allowing the Cougars to hang on.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Akayla Hackson made the first of two free throws with 11 seconds remaining to push the San Marcos lead to 74–68.

POINTER BREAKS OUT… Not only was Lauryn Pointer's 20–point night a career high, it was the first 20–point game by an Otters since Serena Toney hung 22 on Stanislaus State on Jan. 23, 2020.

FROM WAY DOWNTOWN… The Otters wore their shooting shoes Thursday night versus San Marcos, making a season–high 11 3–point field goals on 20 attempts (55 percent). The 11 treys tie for the No. 5 spot in the Otter record book while the 55.0 percentage marksmanship ranks No. 3 all–time.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Lauryn Pointer 20; REBOUNDS: Sarah Shaw 11; ASSISTS: Emily Perez 3; BLOCKS: Sarah Shaw 1; STEALS: Isabel Lizarraga/Emily Perez/Sarah Shaw 1.

THE LAST WORD… "Exciting game all the way around. We did not come away with the result we wanted, but I am proud of my team's relentless fight as we battled against a very good team tonight. There were a lot of good moments for us upon which to build and we plan to do that tomorrow in preparation for our next game on Saturday." – CSUMB Head Coach CJ Vaifanua-Pace

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will conclude the 2021 portion of their schedule by hosting Cal State L.A. Saturday (Dec. 11) for a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 3 p.m.
