Cold Otter Second Half Allows San Marcos To Escape

CSUMB goes 1–for–12 from long range late as Cougars hold on for 76–68 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay went Arctic–level cold in the second half, allowing No. 18 ranked Cal State San Marcos to escape with a 76–68 win Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB (3–3, 2–1 CCAA) led 39–38 at the half before shooting a season–low 8.3 percent (1–for–12) from beyond the arc in the final 20 minutes. This after going 6–for–13 from long range in the first half.

The Otters didn't do themselves any favors by going 8–for–15 (53.3 percent) from the line in the second period either.

For its part, San Marcos cooled off a bit from a first half in which it shot 52 percent, but University of Wyoming transfer Greg Milton and All–CCAA guard Blake Seits made enough plays to allow the Cougars to remain undefeated (8–0, 4–0).

Senior guard Jordan May (Troutdale, Ore./Point Loma Nazarene) led three Otters in double figures with 12 points. Sophomore forward Kyle Johnson (Point Loma HS) matched his season–high for the second consecutive game with nine rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Greg Milton made the first of two free throws with 43 seconds remaining to give San Marcos a 74–63 lead.

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST END, IF JUST BARELY… The Otters saw their streak of rebounding advantages end as San Marcos became the first team to out–rebound them, holding a 41–40 edge Thursday night.

WHEN FREE THROWS AREN'T FREE… The Otters had been shooting free throws well this season, coming into Thursday's game with a very respectable 72.1 team percentage. They shot a season–low 57.9 percent (11–for–19) Thursday versus San Marcos.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jordan May 12; REBOUNDS: Kyle Johnson 9; ASSISTS: Four Otters 2; BLOCKS: Kyle Johnson 2; STEALS: Levi Frankland 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters host Cal State L.A. for their penultimate game of 2021 Saturday (Dec. 11). Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. as the second game of men's/women's doubleheader action.
