Otters See More Growth In Six-Point Loss At Humboldt

Otters set season highs for points and assists in 65-59 defeat

ARCATA, Calif. — Although the final score didn't go its way, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team took several strides forward in a 65–59 loss at Humboldt State Saturday night in Lumberjack Arena.

The Otters set season highs for points (59), assists (13) and 3–point field goals (7). Trailing by 20 in the fourth quarter, they rallied back to within two possessions of the lead before finally running out of time.

Freshman guard Emily Perez (Long Beach/St. Anthony HS) led the Otter offense for the third time in seven games with 13 points. Fellow freshman guard Frances Potts (Carson/Warren HS) added 10 points and team highs of eight rebounds and five assists.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Humboldt got the ball following an Emily Perez 3–pointer dribbled out the final 21 seconds.

STARTING FAST… For the second consecutive game, the Otters got off to their fastest start this season by scoring 18 points in the first quarter Saturday night at Humboldt State. Their previous best of 14 points came Thursday night at Sonoma State.

POTTS LENDS A HAND (FIVE OF THEM)… Not only were the five assists dished by freshman Francis Potts a personal best, they were the most passed by an Otter this season.

FROM DOWNTOWN… The Otters made a season–high seven 3-pointers (7–for–18) Saturday night at Humboldt State. That set season highs for both made threes and 3–point percentage (.389).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Emily Perez 13. REBOUNDS: Frances Potts 8. ASSISTS: Frances Potts 5. STEALS: Emily Perez 4. BLOCKS: None.

THE LAST WORD… "Not the outcome we wanted but I am proud of my team for fighting. This is a tough environment to play in and they locked in and battled from being down 20. A lot of room to grow and we will continue to chip away at it everyday." — CSUMB Head Coach CJ Vaifanua-Pace

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of The Kelp Be for the first time since February 2020 when they host Cal State San Marcos Thursday (Dec. 9) as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. with the men scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip.
