Otters Find A Way, Beat Humboldt In OT Thriller

Otters thwart late Lumberjack rally as Nelson comes up clutch

ARCATA, Calif. — Freshman Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) played with the poise of a senior when it mattered most, helping Cal State Monterey Bay thwart a late Humboldt State rally to lift the Otters to a 77–74 overtime victory Saturday night in Lumberjack Arena.

Nelson recorded his first collegiate double–double with 14 points and 10 rebounds, saving his biggest plays for the end of overtime. With the Otters clinging to a 1–point lead and 41 second remaining, he grabbed his 10th rebound of the night then made a pair of free throws to extend the CSUMB lead to 75–72.

With the Otters again clinging to a 1–point lead 30 second later, he knocked down two more free throws to give them another 3–point cushion. Nelson then sealed the game on the defensive end by stripping Amari Green of the ball to run out the clock.

CSUMB never trailed in regulation and built a lead as big as 18 points. But the Lumberjacks made a furious comeback at the end of regulation, out–scoring the Otters 13–0 over the final 2:43 to force overtime tied at 66–66.

Humboldt capped its 15–0 run by scoring the first bucket of overtime to take its first lead at 68–66. But a pair of Kyle Johnson (Point Loma HS) free throws and a Noah Stapes (San Jose/St. Francis HS) trey put the Otters back on top and they guarded the lead jealously over the final 2:35.

Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Queensland, Aust.) led all scorers with 21 points for CSUMB. Fellow Aussie Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Aust.) chipped in his second double–double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Jailen Nelson stripped Amari Green of the ball with two second remaining in overtime.

WORKING OVERTIME… Saturday's 77–74 win at Humboldt State was CSUMB's first overtime victory since a 78–76 win at UC San Diego on Dec. 8, 2017.

20–20–20 VISION… By finishing with a game–high 21 points in Saturday's win at Humboldt State, Levi Frankland became the third different Otter in as many games to sscore 20 or more points. Jordan May score 20 against Saint Martin's on Nov. 27 and Noah Stapes scored 23 in Thursday night's win at Sonoma State.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… The sweep of Sonoma State and Humboldt State marked the second time in CSUMB's last three road trip that it earned a sweep. The Otters also sweep the Cal State L.A./Cal State Dominguez Hills trip Feb. 6–8, 2020.

ICE WATER IN THEIR VEINS… The Otters came up clutch at the free-throw line with the game on the line in Saturday's win at Humboldt State. CSUMB made 11–of–12 attempts from the strip over the final six minutes of regulation and overtime to secure the win.

TAKE THEM, THEY'RE FREE… CSUMB went 20–of–27 (.741) from the line in Saturday's win at Humboldt State. The 20 makes were the must by an Otter team since they made 30 in a 103–97 win at Cal State L.A. on Feb. 6, 2020.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Levi Frankland 21. REBOUNDS: Andrew Ferguson/Jailen Nelson 10. ASSISTS: Levi Frankland 2. BLOCKS: Noah Stapes 2. STEALS: Levi Frankland/Jailen Nelson 2.

THE LAST WORD… "To start conference play with 2 wins on the road is huge for our program. While I would have loved to see our guys put the game away when we had a double–digit lead, the way it played out couldn't be better for our growth as a team. We faced some big time adversity, and what we lacked in execution, we made up for in toughness." — CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the frinedly confines of The Kelp Bed to host Cal State San Marcos as part of a CCAA doubleheader Thursday (Dec. 9). The men will tip-off at 7:30 following a 5:30 p.m. women's tip.
