Fast Start, Cold Finish For Otters In 49–40 Loss At Sonoma State

Emily Perez leads MB for the third time this season with 11 points

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team got off to its best start of the season but couldn't sustain the pace Thursday night in a 49–40 loss to Sonoma State in The Wolves Den.

Freshman Emily Perez (Long Beach/St. Anthony HS) led CSUMB in scoring for the third time in six games this season with 11 points. Sarah Shaw (Dana Point/JSerra HS) and Sidni Wise-Wright (Las Vegas, Nev./River Valley HS) shared team–high honors with six rebounds each.

CSUMB scored a season–best 14 points in the first quarter on 7–of–14 shooting. The Otters went cold over the final 30 minutes, however, going 11–for–37 (.297) the rest of the way.

The Otters defense played a strong game to keep CSUMB in it until the final minute of regulation. They held an opponent under 50 points for the second time in the last three games and limited Sonoma to an Otter opponent season low 31.5 percent shooting from the floor.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… the Otters turned the ball over with 44 seconds remaining and Sonoma holding a 47–38 lead.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Junior guard Isabel Lizarraga (Dominguez HS/Long Beach CC) became the sixth different Otter to score in double figures through six games this season when she finished with a career–high 10 points Thursday night at Sonoma State.

START ME UP… The Otters scored 14 points in the first quarter Thursday night at Sonoma. That was their highest output in the first quarter this season.

SLOW ME DOWN… After their fast start, things slowed down considerably for the Otters as they finished with a season–low 40 points for the game.

FREE THROWS ARE EXPENSIVE… Although points from the charity stripe are supposed to be free, they proved costly to the Otters Thursday night in Sonoma. The Seawolves made nine free throws to just one for CSUMB, a huge difference in Sonoma's 9–point victory.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Emily Perez 11; REBOUNDS: Sarah Shaw/Sidni Wise-Wright 6; ASSISTS: Emily Perez 3; BLOCKS: Sidni Wise-Wright 1; STEALS: Rayshanti McNeal Price 2.

THE LAST WORD… "We have to learn lessons and adjust quicker. As a coach, it is tough to say, but we were outworked tonight and it was unacceptable. We have to be better at the little things and we must get better at taking care of the ball." – CSUMB Head Coach CJ Vaifanua-Pace

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their season–opening 7–game roadtrip when they face Humboldt State Saturday (Dec. 11) in Arcata as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
