Defense, Long–Range Shooting Lead Otters To Big Win

Noah Stapes scores career–high 23 in 75–50 win at Sonoma

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — A strong defensive effort and lights–out shooting from long range were more than enough to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to a 75–50 win at Sonoma State Thursday night in The Wolves Den.

Senior forward Noah Stapes (San Jose/St. Francis HS) scored 20 of his career–high 23 points in the first half while the Otter defense held an opponent to 50 or fewer points for the first time in six seasons. That combination allowed CSUMB to build a 9–point lead at the half and hold a double–digit lead for the final 19:37.

The Otters actually trailed 19–10 midway through the first half when Stapes caught fire. He kick–started the comeback with a midrange jumper and, when the dust had settled, scored 14 points in five minutes of a 17–2 run that gave the Otters the lead for good.

In addition to Stapes, freshman Jordan Archie (Bishop Montgomery HS) scored 10 points, Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Aust.) pulled down a game–high nine rebounds and junior guard Tommy Kramer (Amador Valley HS) passed a game–high six assists.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN…Everett Perrot's dunk off a Jordan Archie feed gave the Otters a 67–48 lead with 2:40 remaining.

FOR (CCAA) OPENERS: With Thursday's 75–50 win at Sonoma State, the Otters now are 6–10 all–time in CCAA openers dating back to their inaugural CCAA campaign of 2004–05. It was CSUMB's first CCAA–opening win since beating UC San Diego 64–62 on Dec. 5, 2014.

"50TH" ANNIVERSARY… The Otters celebrated the 6–year anniversary of a strong defensive effort a day late Thursday night at Sonoma State. In holding the Seawolves to 50 points, they allowed 50 or fewer points for the first time since a 90–50 win over Notre Dame de Namur on December 1, 2015.

NOAH MAKES IT RAIN THREES… Noah Stapes knocked down seven 3–pointers as part of his career–high 23 points in Thursday's 75–50 win at Sonoma State. Both of those totals are career highs.

WHEN SEVEN EQUALS SECOND… The seven 3–pointers by Noah Stapes Thursday night at Sonoma State are tied for the second most treys in a game in Otter history. The last player to do it was Jonquis Bouyea, who made seven against Stanislaus State on Feb. 24, 2018. In case you're wondering, Brandon Ward set the record with eight threes in a game at Sonoma State on Feb. 2, 2012.

WHEN 15 EQUALS THIRD… Led by Noah Stapes, the Otters made 15 3–pointers in Thursday's win at Sonoma State. That mark is tied for the third most in Otter history. The last time they made 15 in a game came the last time they played Sonoma in The Wolves Den on Jan. 16, 2020.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Noah Stapes 23; REBOUNDS: Andrew Ferguson 9; ASSISTS: Tommy Kramer 6; BLOCKS: Andrew Ferguson 1; STEALS: Jordan Archie/Tommy Kramer/Jailen Nelson 2.

THE LAST WORD… "I thought the guys did a great job defensively the entire game and we had some stretches of really good offense in there too. More importantly, the energy between the players was very good. Regardless if we were up or down, they supported each other on the floor and from the sideline." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their trip up the coast Saturday (Dec. 4) when they meet Humboldt State as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
