Otters Finish SoCal Trip with Split After Loss At L.A.

Tough hitting night for CSUMB allows L.A. to earn the sweep

LOS ANGELES — Cal State Monterey Bay finished its final roadtrip of the season on a down note as Cal State L.A. earned a 25–16, 25–21, 25–17 sweep Saturday evening in CSULA's University Gymnasium.

The Otter offense was uncharacteristically sloppy for the second consecutive day, hitting a season–low .116 one night after hitting .146 in a win at Cal State Dominguez Hills. CSUMB was able to get away with it against the last place Toros. Against a team the caliber of Cal State L.A., however, it was simply too much to overcome.

Junior opposite Abby Knapp (Atwater HS/Gonzaga) led CSUMB with eight kills in 18 swings and a .333 attack percentage. None of the other Otter hitters were able to find traction on this night.

The Golden Eagles ran and hid in the first set, but the Otters battled in the final two frames. The Otters led for a good chuck of the second set and were as close as 21–20 before L.A. pulled away. In the third set, Mollin Helfrich (Pinole/Salesian Prep) served CSUMB to within 16–15 before a 9–2 finishing run seal the match for the Golden Eagles.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Cal State L.A. scored four consecutive points to turn a slim 16–15 lead into a 20–16 advantage that wouldn't be challenged.

PLAYING THE PERCENTAGES, PLAYER EDITION… Junior opposite Abby Knapp is in prime position to break the CSUMB record for attack percentage in a season. She will enter the final weekend of playing hitting .357. That's 24 points better than the current record of .333 by middle blocker Samantha Brennan in 2017. It's also 62 points better than Amber Tygart's .295 mark (also in 2017), the best by a pin hitter in Otter history.

PLAYING THE PERCENTAGES, TEAM EDITION… The Otters were on pace to break the school record for attack percentage in a season before this weekend's trip to Southern California. They began the week hitting .248 — five points better than the current record of .243 set in 2017. They'll head into the final weekend hitting .236. That mark would still rank No. 2 all–time.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Kaylie Honberger 9.0; KILLS: Abby Knapp 8; BLOCKS: Kaylie Honberger 4; ACES: Alexa Blunt/Sam Chavez/Kaila Uota 1; DIGS: Sam Chavez 11.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to The Kelp Bed to close the 2021 campaign by hosting Cal State East Bay Friday (Nov. 12) and Cal State San Marcos Saturday (Nov. 13). First serve for both matches will be at 7 p.m.
