Otter Complete Battle of the Bays Sweep With 5–Set Win

CSUMB improves to 12–9 with third 5–set win of the season

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay completed a Battle of the Bays season sweep by holding off pesky Cal State East Bay 25–22, 21–25, 25–15, 20–25, 15–11 Friday night in The Kelp Bed. The Otters defeated East Bay in four sets on Sept. 18 in Hayward.

Junior Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS) led three Otters in double figures with 15 kills. Freshman Kennedy Adams Temecula HS) added 13 kills while junior middle Mollin Helfrich (Pionle/Salesian Prep) chipped in 11 kills and a match–high six blocks.

It all came down to a grueling fifth set that featured 10 consecutive side outs as both teams sought solid footing. East Bay broke the spell when Mia Jordan and Karis Carter combined for a block to give the Pioneers an 8–7 lead.

Junior Abby Knapp (Atwater HS)/Gonzaga) restored order for the Otters with a kill that tied the match at 9–9. She then combined with freshman Kea Veenendaal (Boulder, Colo./Fairview HS) for a block that put CSUMB up 11–9.

East Bay never got closer than two points again.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Mollin Helfrich punished a Pioneer overpass on match point.

THE GOOD HANDS PEOPLE… Senior setter Sophia Torres and junior Aly Fullbright both made moves on the Otter single season assist list in Friday's win over Cal State East Bay. With 30 assists, Torres passed Dana Grimm (2007) for No. 15 with 483 assists this season. Fullbright's 25 helpers, meanwhile, moved her into the Top 25 with 295, passing Whitney Hirst (2015) for that spot.

GOING THE DISTANCE… Friday's 5–set win over Cal State East Bay lifted CSUMB's record in 5–setters to 3–1 in 2021. That's the most 5–set wins for the Otters since they won five such matches in 2016.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… The Otters swept the season series from the Pioneers for the first time since the 2014 campaign.

OTTER vs. OTTER… Friday's match marked the first time CSUMB Head Coach Courtney (Taubert) Materazzi and East Bay Head Coach Kimberly (Sordello) Lambert have been together in The Kelp Bed since they both played for the Otters in the 2007 season. For those keeping score at home, Materazzi is now 2–0 as a coach against her former teammate.
