CARSON, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay extended its winning streak to a season–best four match with a 25–23, 25–15, 19–25, 25–20 win at Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday evening in The Torodome.

Despite losing two weeks and four matches due to COVID restrictions, the win assures CSUMB (11–8 overall) its fifth .500 or better finish since moving to the NCAA Division II level and its third in the last four seasons. The win also keeps CSUMB alive in the race for the CCAA Tournament with three matches remaining.

The Otters were uncharacteristically cavalier with the ball, committing a season–high 29 errors Friday. But nine service aces and a season–high 10 total blocks helped CSUMB make up the difference.

Setters Sophia Torres (20 assists) and Aly Fullbright (18) spread the ball to seven hitters, with junior outside hitter Kaylie Honberger leading the balance attack with 10 kills. Middle blocker Kea Veenendaal led the net defense with seven blocks while Honberger completed her third double–double of the season with a career–high 21 digs to top the back row.

The Otters rolled to a victory in the second set, but held off Toro comebacks to win sets one and four. Dominguez Hills finished the third set with a 9–4 run to claim its only win of the evening.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… After the Toros closed to within 20–19 in the fourth set, four different Otters recorded kills in a match–ending 5–1 CSUMB run.

OTTERS ARE WINNERS, FALL SPORTS EDITION… Now that the Otter volleyball team is assured of finishing at least .500, all three CSUMB fall team sports will finish at or above .500 in the same year for the first time in program history. The men's soccer team finished its season Thursday at 7–4–6 while the women's soccer team finished 7–5–5.

ON THE BLOCKS… Led by seven blocks from freshman Kea Veenendaal, the Otters compiled a season–high 10.0 team blocks in Friday's win at Cal State Dominguez Hills. That mark ranks No. 15 in the CSUMB record book for blocks in a 4–set match.

THE 400 CLUB… With 18 digs in Friday's win over Cal State Dominguez Hills, Sam Chavez became the 24th player in CSUMB history to surpass 400 career digs. She now has 414 total digs, passing Whitney Hirst (412) for No. 23 on the Otter career list.

SHE'S ACES… Alexa Blunt tied her personal record with three aces in Friday's win at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
