Cold Start Dooms Otters In 81–52 Loss To Fresno Pacific

Otters start 2–for–15 from the field; Emily Perez leads MB with 12 points

SAN FRANCISCO — Cal State Monterey Bay opened the game 2–for–15 from the floor and never could climb out of the hole that created in an 81–52 loss to Fresno Pacific University Saturday afternoon at the San Francisco State Invitational in The Swamp.

Playing without senior guard Lauryn Pointer (Los Angeles/UC Riverside), who was nursing an injury, the Otters managed just 15 points in the first half as the Sunbirds built a 35–15 lead. CSUMB put together a more solid second half, scoring a season best 37 points over the final 20 minutes, but the damage had been done.

Freshman Emily Perez (Long Beach/St. Anthony HS) led the offense with 12 points and three assists. Fellow freshman Sarah Shaw (Dana Point/JSerra HS) led the way on the glass with seven rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Joleen Corona knocked down a 3–pointer to give Fresno Pacific a 60–33 lead with 9:15 remaining.

DOUBLE DOUBLE FIGURES… Freshman Emily Perez scored in double figures for the second consecutive game with a team–high 12 points Saturday versus Fresno Pacific. She also had 12 Friday against Dominican University

EVERYBODY JOINS IN… All 10 Otters who saw action Saturday versus Fresno Pacific scored. Included in that group was freshman guard Angelina Cortes (Watsonville/Monte Vista Christian), who scored her first collegiate points Saturday.

SECOND CHANCES… Although they didn't shoot well early, the Otters made the most of their second chances, generating 18 points from 12 offensive rebounds Saturday versus Fresno Pacific.

BACK ON THE BLOCKS… After being held without a block Friday versus Dominican University, the Otters got back on track with two Saturday versus the Sunbirds. Liz Cruz and Samiya Terry did the honors.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Emily Perez 12; REBOUNDS: Sarah Shaw 7; ASSISTS: Emily Perez 3; BLOCKS: Liz Cruz/Samiya Terry 1; STEALS: Rebecca Castillo 2.
