Otters Hold Off Hawks For First Win, 53–46

11–0 finishing kick leads MB to victory

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team made the clutch plays it needed to down the stretch to earn its first victory of the season Tuesday night, defeating Holy Names University 53–46 in Tobin Gym.

The Otters got 13 points apiece from freshmen Emily Perez (Long Beach, St. Anthony HS) and Frances Potts (Carson/Warren HS) and 15 rebounds from L.A. Valley College transfer Rebecca Castillo (Bishop Alemany). Freshman post Sarah Shaw (Dana Point/JSerra HS) added five points, with three of those coming on a clutch 3–point play to give the Otters the lead for good at 47–46 with 1:17 remaining.

The Otters looked like they were going to pull away several times in the second half, opening their biggest lead at 38–30 on a Potts layup with 8:25 remaining in regulation. But Holy Names battled back with an 11–2 run to grab its biggest lead, 46–42, inside of three minutes remaining.

That's when the Otter defense clamped down, however, shutting out the Hawks for the balance of the game and allowing the offense to finish with 11 unanswered points to account for the final margin.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Angelina Cortes made a layup in transition with 7.7 seconds remaining for the final points of the game.

CHAIRWOMEN OF THE BOARDS… The Otters out–rebounded Holy Names 44–18 Tuesday night for a margin of plus–26. Its the third–largest rebounding margin in program history and the largest since they were plus–28 (54–26) in 71–57 win over Dominican University on Dec. 28, 2009.

CHAIRWOMAN OF THE BOARDS… Leading the effort on the glass was junior Rebecca Castillo, who pulled down 15 rebounds in Tuesday's win at Holy Names. They were the most rebounds by an Otters since Courtney Keaton grabbed 17 caroms in a win over San Francisco State on Feb. 16, 2019.

TRIPLE DOUBLE… Freshman Emily Perez recorded her third consecutive double–figure scoring night with a season–high 13 in Tuesday's win at Holy Names.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Emily Perez/Frances Potts, 13; REBOUNDS: Rebecca Castillo 15; ASSISTS: Isabel Lizarraga, Sarah Shaw 1; BLOCKS: Rebecca Castillo 1; STEALS: Frances Potts 2.

THE LAST WORD… "We were short on bodies and it was the next woman up mentality. We finally got on the boards tonight like we game planned planned. Rebecca Castillo had 15 big ones that helped us control tempo on the glass all night. Frances Potts had a steady game and took the next step in her growth. I'm proud of the team's effort tonight." – CSUMB Head Coach CJ Vaifanua–Pace

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters get an early start to their CCAA schedule with a trip back to the City to take on San Francisco State Saturday (Nov. 27). Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. Note that this is not part of a doubleheader as it would be in a normal CCAA contest.
