Dominican Holds On Late To Down Otters 63–58

Lauryn Pointer leads MB with 16 points in opener if S.F State Invitational

SAN FRANCISCO — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team gave itself a chance to win, but Dominican University held on late to earn a 63–58 win in the opening game of the S.F. State Invitational Friday afternoon in The Swamp at San Francisco State.

Senior guard Lauryn Pointer (Los Angeles/UC Riverside) led three Otters in double figures with a career–high 16 points. Freshmen Emily Perez (Long Beach/St. Anthony HS) and Frances Potts (Carson/Warren HS) added 12 and 10 points respectively.

CSUMB trailed by just one at the half (24–23) and just six entering the final quarter, keeping the game within two possessions for much of the second half. The Otters got three consecutive stops trailing by four in the final 2:39 but couldn't get over the hump.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Riley Friauf grabbed the rebound of a missed Otter 3–point attempt with 15 seconds remaining. CSUMB never saw the ball again.

ON THE REBOUND… The Otters enjoyed a big day on the boards, out–rebounding Dominican 37–17 for the game. The 20–rebound advantage was CSUMB's best team effort on the glass since out–rebounding San Francisco State 46–23 (+23) on Feb. 16, 2019.

FANCY SHOOTING… The Otters shot an even 50 percent (24–48) from the field Friday versus Dominican. It was CSUMB's best shooting day from the floor since it also went 24–of–48 in a win over Stanislaus State on Dec. 11, 2015.

'TIS NOT BETTER TO GIVE… The Otters gave themselves a chance to win despite being a little too giving with the ball Friday. CSUMB committed 34 turnovers, One has to go back 15 years to find the last time the Otters were so generous in a game (36 vs. Cal State Bakersfield on Feb. 25, 2006).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Lauryn Pointer 16; REBOUNDS: Rebecca Castillo 8; ASSISTS: Emily Perez/Lauryn Pointer 3; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: Emily Perez/Lauryn Pointer 3.

THE LAST WORD… "We had some moments of some good things and we will continue to working on the little things. We'll take care of the ball, get a few more stops and we will turn the corner. Kudos to Dominican for being scrappy and making us work for every possession." – CSUMB Head Coach CJ Vaifanua–Pace

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude play at the S.F. State Invitational by taking on Fresno Pacific Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. Watch live for free on the CCAA Network at CCAANetwork.com/csumb.
