Cold Shooting Dooms Otters In Season Opener

CSUMB just 2-for-21 from long range in 74-63 loss to Central Washington

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay suffered an historically off shooting game from distance and couldn't overcome the handicap in a 74–63 loss to Central Washington Friday evening in The Kelp Bed.

The Otters were just 2–for–21 from beyond the arc (9.5 percent). You'd have to go back to January 18, 2013 — when the Otters went 0–for–14 against UC San Diego — to find the last time they were under 10 percent from long range.

But the Otters kept themselves in the game right up until the closing moments by shooting 52 percent inside the arc. Although the Wildcats led for most of the game, they couldn't put CSUMB away UNTIL the final two minutes.

Junior forward Jared Williams (Eastvale/Roosevelt HS) led three Otters in double figures with 14 points, two off his career high. He also pulled down a game–high eight rebounds. Junior Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Queensland, Aust.) and freshman Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) added 12 and 11 points respectively in the first games as Otters.

CSUMB returns to action Saturday by hosting Western Oregon. Tip-off is schedule for 3 p.m.
