Short–Handed Otters Return To Action With Tough Loss

Defending NCAA champ Cal State San Bernardino wins in three

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — After missing the better part of three weeks due to COVID protocols, the short–handed Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team returned to action facing the gargantuan task of playing at defending NCAA Champion Cal State San Bernardino. It proved to be a tough welcome back for the Otters, who fell 25–14, 25–17, 25–17 Friday night in Coussoulis Arena.

Playing at San Bernardino is always tough. Facing the Coyotes without your top player—in this case 2–time All–CCAA outside hitter Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS)—made the task quixotic at best.

To its tremendous credit, CSUMB came out strong, taking an early 9–8 lead in the opening set before San Bernardino closed with a 17–5 run. The second and third sets followed a similar pattern, with the teams playing even early before the Coyotes pulled away to complete the sweep.

Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS), who had played middle blocker through the first 10 matches, made an emergency start on the left side and led CSUMB with nine kills. Mollin Helfrich (Salesian Prep) and Abby Knapp (Gonzaga/Atwater HS) led the net defense with two blocks apiece. Libero Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) topped the team with 11 digs.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… an Asia Clark kill started an 8–2 run that gave San Bernardino an 18–10 lead in the third set. CSUMB never got closer than six points the rest of the way.

MAKING HER PRESENCE FELT… Freshman Kennedy Adams saw her first action since Sept. 11 and made the most of it by recording a season–high six kills.

WELCOME BACK ALY… Setter Aly Fullbright returned from injury and played for the first time since Sept. 10 Friday at San Bernardino. She shared setting duties with Sophia Torres with each player dishing 13 assists.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Lauren Reeves 9.0; KILLS: Lauren Reeves 9; BLOCKS: Mollin Helfrich/Abby Knapp 2; ACES: Aly Fullbright/Sophia Torres 1; DIGS: Sam Chavez 11.

THE LAST WORD… ""San Bernardino is always going to be a force, and tonight was no different. Lead by (Sam) Chavez and Bella, our defense really stayed focused and true to our scouting report. Going into tomorrow we'll need to refocus on our serve/receive and offensive intent—which Kennedy Adams had a lot of tonight!"." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their Southern California trip by playing at Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night in Kellogg Arena. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
