Otters Earn Historic Win With Sweep Of Sonoma

CSUMB sweeps Seawolves for the first time in 32 meetings

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay earned its most impressive result of the Courtney Materazzi era with a convincing and historic 25–11, 25–16, 25–18 sweep of Sonoma State Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.

The win marked the first time CSUMB (10–8 overall) ever swept Sonoma (9–11) in 32 attempts. The Otters did it by hitting .409, their highest attack percentage ever against a CCAA opponent.

CSUMB raced to a big early lead in the opening set but had to overcome a stubborn Seawolf squad in sets two and three. Sonoma was as close as 11–10 in the second—and led 13–12 in the third—before big runs allowed the Otters to pull away for both wins.

Otter setters Sophia Torres (Temecula/Chaparral HS) and Aly Fullbright (Huntington Beach/Edison HS) spread the ball effectively as five hitters registered between six and nine kills. Freshman opposite Kennedy Adams (Temecula HS) led the balanced effort with nine.

Torres added to the attack by serving a CSUMB–record six aces. Junior opposite Abby Knapp (Atwater HS/Gonzaga) led the net defense with four blocks.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a Lauren Reeves kill broke a 14–14 tie in the third set. The Otters out–scored Sonoma 11–4 down the stretch to ease away for the sweep.

SHE'S ACES… Sophia Torres tied the Otter record for aces in a 3–set match with six Saturday night versus Sonoma State. The record was set three times previously, last by Ashlynne Armstrong against Humboldt State on Oct. 21, 2018.

THEY'RE ACES… Led by six aces from Sophia Torres, the Otters served 11 in Saturday's sweep of Sonoma State. That is tied for No. 6 on the CSUMB list for aces in a 3–set match.

PLAYING THE PERCENTAGES… CSUMB's .409 attack percentage in Saturday's sweep of Sonoma State was its highest ever against a CCAA opponent, eclipsing the .340 the Otters hit against Humboldt State on Nov. 6, 2010. It's also the third highest percentage in Otter history. CSUMB hit .606 against Holy Names in 2017 and .451 in a sweep of Dominican University on Sept. 11 of this season.

PLAYING THE PERCENTAGES, PART II… Adding in the .394 CSUMB hit in sweeping Academy of Art on Sept. 10, three of the four top attack percentages in Otter history have come under first–year Head Coach Courtney Materazzi.
