Otters Make It Two In A Row With Sweep

CSUMB hits .330 to take out Humboldt State

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay made it two wins in a row with a convincing 26–24, 25–18, 25–20 sweep of visiting Humboldt State Friday evening in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB hit an impressive .330 for the match, the fifth time in 17 matches this season the Otters have cracked the .300 mark. Junior outside hitter Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS) led the way by hitting .611 (11–0–18). Juniors Abby Knapp (Atwater HS/Gonzaga) and Mollin Helfrich (Salesian Prep) also had big nights, hitting .462 and .444 respectively.

It took the Otters awhile to find their sea legs, but Humboldt struggled early as well as seven Lumberjack service errors in the opening set helped CSUMB pull out a 26–24 win. Humboldt pulled ahead 14–11 in the second before a Lumberjack service error kicked off a 10–1 Otter burst that gave the Otters a 2–set advantage.

The Otters seemed ready to run and hide in the third set before a late Humboldt rally gave the Lumberjacks a brief 19–18 lead. But another service error killed the momentum. Helfrich then stepped to the line to serve four consecutive points to give CSUMB ultimate control.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Mollin Helfrich served consecutive aces to extend the Otter lead to 22–19 in the third set. Humboldt never got closer than three points again.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… Friday's sweep was CSUMB's third of the season and its first in CCAA play. Previously, the Otters swept Academy of Art (Sept. 10) and Dominican University (Sept. 11).

SHE'S (ALMOST) NUMBER ONE… She finished two attack attempts short of qualifying for the record, but Lauren Reeves still enjoyed an impressive night by hitting .611 in 18 swings. The CSUMB record for attack percentage in a match (min. 20 attempts) belongs to Elizabeth Hanna, who hit .750 against Chaminade in 2009. Lily Staight is No. 2 on the list at .571. It's worth noting that Kennedy Adams (No. 4, .545) and Abby Knapp (No. 9, .524) already have made the list this season.

LENDING A HAND… CSUMB's 43 assists in Friday's sweep of Humboldt State rank No. 19 on the Otter all–time list for assists in a 3–set match. Sophia Torres (16) and Aly Fullbright (15) did the bulk of the work quarterbacking the Otter 6–2 attack.

The pins did such a great job of staying aggressive on their attacks through the entire match and Mollin served with such confidence and determination in the final set. I love seeing the very deserved confidence in themselves. Our focus tonight started well before the first whistle, with everyone taking ownership in film and game day prep.
