Otters Drop Tight Three–Set Match At S.F. State

Freshman Kennedy Adams has a big night with 14 kills

SAN FRANCISCO — A breakout match from Kennedy Adams and a tenacious comeback attempt weren't enough for Cal State Monterey Bay as San Francisco State held on for a 25–23, 25–19, 26–24 win Saturday night in The Swamp.

Adams, a freshman from Temecula High School, saw her most significant action to date and made the most of the opportunity. She finished with a match–high 14 kills, the first double–figure kills match of her collegiate career.
Adams also hit an impressive .545 for the evening (14–2–22). The rest of the lineup couldn't find that same level of efficiency, however, combining to hit .115 and telling the tale of the match.

CSUMB led 23–19 in the opening set before the Gators came back to score the final six points for the win. After SFSU rolled in the second set, the Otters pulled off a big rally to climb from 16–9 down and tie the match at 24–24 before the Gators finally finished it.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Izzy Issak served an ace at 25–24 to clinch match point for SFSU.

LOOKING FOR HOME COOKING… After playing 14 of their first 15 matches on the road, the Otters can look forward to a little home cooking. They play their next four within the friendly confines of The Kelp Bed.

ONE FOR THE BOOKS… Kennedy Adams' big night on the attack will find a home in the Otter record book. Her .545 attack percentage (14–2–22) is tied for No. 4 in Otter history for attack percentage in a match (min. 20 TA). She equalled the mark of Jessica Malcolm, who went 14–2–22 against Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 29, 2012.

CHAVEZ BREAKS INTO THE TOP 25… With a team–high 14 digs Saturday at San Francisco State, Sam Chavez takes sole possession of the No. 25 spot on the Otter career digs list with 340. She needs 31 more digs to pass Paige Burrell for No. 24.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Kennedy Adams 14.0; KILLS: Kennedy Adams 14; BLOCKS: Mollin Helfrich/Abby Knapp 3; ACES: Alexa Blunt/Aly Fullbright/Kaylie Honberger 2; DIGS: Sam Chavez 14.

THE LAST WORD… "We had a lot of focus points tonight that you won't see on a stat sheet, and I'm very happy with how we represented ourselves on the floor. Kennedy Adams had an exceptional night. She moved her runs around offensively and was so terminal. Sam Chavez also lead us and had some huge plays. We have a great opportunity this coming weekend and I'm excited to move forward from the highs we had this evening." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to begin a 4–match homestand Friday (Oct. 22) when Chico State visits for a 7 p.m. first serve.
