Two Big Comebacks Not Enough As Chico Takes 5–Set thriller

Otters rally from 0–2 down to earn a match point before falling in five

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey bay made a pair of big comebacks, but it wasn't quite enough Friday night as Chico State held on late to take a 25–17, 25–23, 21–25, 21–25, 16–14 thriller in The Kelp Bed.

After trailing by two sets and then trailing 5–1 in the fifth, the Otters rallied first to send the match to a deciding set and then to earn a match point at 14–13. But the Wildcats earned kills on the final three rallies to pull out the win.

The Otters got a career–high 20 kills from junior Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS) and 15 kills against just one error from junior opposite Abby Knapp (Atwater HS/Gonzaga) to spark the comeback. Freshmen Kennedy Adams (Temecula HS) and Kea Veenendaal (Boulder, Colo./Fairview HS) led the net defense with three blocks apiece while libero Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) anchored the backline as usual with 18 digs.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Lizzie Wilson's team–high 19th kill in transition secured match point for the Wildcats.

TOP 20 FOR REEVES… Lauren Reeves became the first Otter to record 20 kills in a match this season with a career–high 20 Friday night versus Chico State. She is the first Otter to reach 20 kills since Jenna Tobin recorded 27 in a win over Hawaii–Hilo on Sept. 13, 2019. She is the first Otter to do it in The Kelp Bed since Maddy Underwood had 20 against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Oct. 20, 2017.

SETTING THE STANDARD… With 27 assists Friday versus Chico State, Sophia Torres moved up to No. 21 on the Otter single–season assist list with 342. She needs two more to pass Megan Jager (2009) for 20th place and eight more to pass Danielle Zimmerman (2005) for 19th.

OF COURSE IT WENT THE DISTANCE… Even after dropping the first two sets, it should have come as no surprise that the Otters and Wildcats went the distance Friday night. It marked the 16th time (in 34 meetings) that the Otters and Wildcats went the full five sets. That's the most of any Otter opponent. The next closest is Humboldt State, with whom CSUMB has gone the distance 11 times in 28 meetings.

MORE 5–SET MADNESS… Not only was Friday's match the 16th time Chico and CSUMB have gone five sets, it marked the ninth time one team or the other rallied from 0–2 down to force a fifth set.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Lauren Reeves 20.5; KILLS: Lauren Reeves 20; BLOCKS: Kennedy Adams/Kea Veenendaal 3; ACES: Jackie Wahl 2; DIGS: Sophia Torres 18.

THE LAST WORD… "Despite the loss, we showed a lot of resiliency and determination tonight. Lauren and Mollin really stepped up to support Abby offensively. I'm very happy to see Lauren earn the numbers we all know she's capable of. Tomorrow we will need to clean up our defensive responsibilities, net play and passing—but I trust we'll turn the frustration of a hard-fought loss tonight into motivation for our match against Stanislaus." — CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–match homestand by hosting Stanislaus State Saturday in The Kelp Bed. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
