Home Sweet Home Opener As Otters Walkoff No. 13 APU

Kokko Figueiredo’s RBI double in the 9th give CSUMB 3–2 win over Azusa Pacific

SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 22 Cal State Monterey Bay enjoyed its first taste of home cooking this season thanks to senior Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna Union HS), who hit a walk–off double in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Otters a 3–2 win over No. 13 Azusa Pacific University Thursday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

Figueiredo laced a double to left center to plate freshman Brady Miguel (San Benito HS) all the way from first base with one out in the ninth. It marked CSUMB's 10th hit and first extra–base hit of the night.

CSUMB actually was poised to put the game away in the previous inning when they loaded the bases with no outs. But Azusa pitcher Jon Keane bore down to strike out the next three Otters and escape the jam.

The best pitching of the night, however, was done by a trio of Otters. Starter Ethan McRae (Fresno CC) fanned five Cougars in four innings of work. Parker Fokken (Menifee/Chaffey College) and Connor Fabing (San Benito HS) sparkled in relief, combining for five innings of 2–hit, shutout relief.

Fabing threw the final two frames, striking out four, to earn his first win of 2020.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Kokko Figueiredo rocketed an 0–2 double to deep left center to plate Brady Miguel for the winning run.

FOR (HOME) OPENERS… The Otters improved to 9–6 overall in home openers dating back to their inaugural season in 2006. They're 8–2 in their last 10 home openers.

A LITTLE REVENGE… Thursday's win over Azusa Pacific gave CSUMB a tiny bit of revenge to the Otters who lost to Azusa Pacific 4–3 at the NCAA Regional to end last season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Kokko Figueiredo (2x5, 2B, GWRBI); Chase Lindemann (2x3, 2 BB); Brady Miguel (2x4, 2 R, RBI); Connor Fabing (W [1–0], 2.0 IP, H, 0 R, 4 K, 0 BB).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 3–game series against Azusa Pacific with 5:30 p.m. first pitch Friday evening.
