Otters Make It Two In A Row With Win Over No. 13 APU

Strong pitching, timely hitting carry CSUMB to a 4–3 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — No. 22 Cal State Monterey Bay made it two wins in a row as strong pitching and timely hitting lifted the Otters to a 4–3 win over No. 13 Azusa Pacific Friday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

Senior Greg Steinbeck (San Benito HS) pitched 5 2/3 strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits. Junior Zac Whittaker (Clovis HS/Fresno CC) got the final out of the sixth inning to earn the win.

Chris Tonna (Fremont/Chabot College) and Colby Harrison (Chico/Pleasant Valley HS) each added an inning of scoreless, hitless relief. Sonny Brandwood (Dublin HS/Laney College) pitched into and out of trouble in the ninth to earn his first save.

After Chase Lindemann (Saugus HS/Hartnell College) led off the Otter first with a single, Azusa starter AJ Woodall no–hit CSUMB for the next 5 2/3 innings before walks to Hunter Harris (Newark/Chabot College) and Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna Union HS) drove him from the game. Kyle Dean (San Diego/BYU) greeted reliever John Szcczesny by lining a 3–2 pitch into the right field corner to give the Otters their first lead of the game.

Dean came home to score on a passed ball for the third Otter run. Figueiredo cashed in Lindemann's leadoff triple in the eighth with an RBI knock to close the Otter scoreline.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Sonny Brandwood got the final two Cougar hitters to go quietly with the potential tying and go–ahead runners on base to end the game.

HOME SWEET HOME… The Otter Sports Complex has proven quite the friendly confines to the Otters as of late. CSUMB is 84–34 (.712) at home in its last 5+ seasons. The Otters have never had a losing record at home in 9+ seasons under Head Coach Walt White, compiling a 150–86 (.630) home record over that span.

LIN DA MAN… Chase Lindemann has sizzled in his first five games as an Otter. After finishing Friday's 4–3 win over No. 13 Azusa Pacific with two hits, a triple and a run, he has now hit safely in all five of his Otter appearances. The season is young, but he is hitting .579 (11–for–19) with five extra–base hits so far.

GIANT KILLERS… With wins over No. 13 Azusa Pacific in the first two games of the series, the Otters have made it three consecutive seasons in which they have posted back–to–back wins over nationally–ranked teams. In fact, the Otters have posted consecutive wins over nationally–ranked opponents in six of 10 seasons under Head Coach Walt White.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Greg Steinbeck (ND, 5.2 IP, R, 5 H, 3 K, 0 BB); Zac Whittaker (W [1–0], 0.1 IP, 0 R, 0 H); Sonny Brandwood (Sv [1], 1.0 IP, 2 R, 4 H); Chase Lindemann 2x4, 3B, R]; Kyle Dean (1x4, 3B, R, 2 RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 3–game series against Azusa Pacific with an 11 a.m. first pitch Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.
