Come–From–Behind Wins Give Otters Sweep At Stanislaus

Otters rally to take two from No. 20 Stanislaus, 7–5 and 5–3

TURLOCK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay rallied from behind twice earn a 7–5, 5–3 doubleheader sweep at No. 20 Stanislaus State Saturday afternoon at the Warrior Baseball Field.

Four innings of outstanding relief from junior Sonny Brandwood (Dublin HS/Laney College) allowed the Otters time to erase a 5–0 deficit in the opener. Ubaldo Romo (Buhach Colony HS/Hartnell College), Colby Harrison (Chico/Pleasant Valley HS) and Parker Fokken (Paloma Valley HS/Chaffey College) combined for three innings of 2–hit, shutout relief as CSUMB climbed from a 3–0 hole to win the nightcap.

Held scoreless for the first 14 innings of the series and trailing 5–0 early in Saturday's first game, the Otters finally broke through in the sixth inning when Chase Lindemann (Saugus HS/Hartnell College) drew a bases–loaded hit by pitch. That served to open the floodgates.

CSUMB scored four times in the seventh inning to tie the game, highlighted by an RBI double from Casey Longaker (Petaluma/Casa Grande HS) and a 2–run single by Jacob Martin (Bloomington HS/Chaffey College). RBI knocks from Longaker and Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) completed the comeback in the eighth.

Stanislaus used a pair of sac flies to take a 3–0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap. Otter starter Augusto Pineda (San Leandro HS/Chabot College) settled down from that point, however, combining with the previously mentioned trio of relievers to shutout the Warriors over the final 6 1/3 innings.

The Otters scored all the runs they would need in the fourth inning, with Keith Hale's (Brentwood/Liberty HS) RBI knock putting them on top to stay. Romo, who pitched 1 2/3 innings of hitless, scoreless relief, earned his first Otter win while Fokken pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.

The Otters will look to earn a series win when they conclude their 4–game set at Stanislaus with a noon first pitch Sunday in Turlock.
