Otters Drop Heart–Breaker In Series Finale At Biola

Eagles win when walk–off homer breaks 9–9 tie in the ninth

LA MIRADA, Calif. — An entertaining game ended in heartbreak for visiting Cal State Monterey Bay as Ben Smith's walk–off home run lifted Biola University to a 10–9 win Saturday at Eagles Diamond.

CSUMB held two early leads in the game then rallied back from a 9–4 deficit to tie the game in the seventh inning. But the heart of the Otter batting order couldn't cash in a bases–loaded, 1–out opportunity after tying the game, leaving the door open for Biola to win at the wire.

The Otters pounded 19 hits, including six doubles. For the series, the Otters out–hit the Eagles 36–29, but couldn't come up with the key hits in the biggest moments, including stranding 13 runners Saturday.

Sophomore Chase Lindemann (Saugus HS/Hartnell College) swung the big bat for CSUMB Saturday, finishing the day 4–for–6 with three doubles and three RBI. He becomes the fourth player in Otter history to double three times in one game and the first since Hayden Duer did it at Cal State East Bay on Feb. 25, 2017.

Senior catcher Hunter Harris (Newark Memorial/Chabot College) enjoyed the first 3–hit game of his collegiate career Saturday and scored three runs, including the run that tied the score at 9–9 in the seventh.

The Otters will look to break into the win column when they host No. 11 Azusa Pacific University for their 2020 home opener Friday, Feb. 6, First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Otter Sports Complex.
