Cold Shooting Hamstrings Otters In Loss At San Marcos

Otters shoot just 22 percent from the floor in 73–48 setback

SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay's bid to upset a nationally–ranked team two games in a row went for naught as its worst shooting day of the season allowed No. 16 Cal State San Marcos to roll to an impressive 73–48 win Saturday afternoon in the CSUSM Sports Center.

The Otters had high hopes for this game, coming off their 59–58 win at No. 24 UC San Diego Thursday night in La Jolla. But San Marcos' stifling defense never let them find a rhythm as the game slipped away early.

Junior Sylvia Vartazarian (Glendale HS/Glendale College) continued her strong run of recent play, finishing with a game–high 18 points and nine rebounds. She was the only Otter to unlock the tough San Marcos defense however, which held the rest of the CSUMB squad to a 7–for–46 (15.2 pct) effort from the field, including 1–for–14 (7.1 pct.) from beyond the arc.

CSUMB missed its first seven shots from the field as the Cougars quickly built a double–digit lead. The Otters went 1–for–17 from the floor over a 12–minute span that included all but the final 16 seconds of the second quarter as San Marcos put the game on ice early.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Taylor Flores made a 3–pointer with 29 seconds remaining in the third quarter to give San Marcos a 61–29 lead.

ICE, ICE BABY… CSUMB's 21.9 pct. (14–for–64) shooting effort from the floor was by far its lowest of the season. It was its lowest since shooting 19.3 pct. (11–for–57) at UC San Diego on Feb. 28, 2019.

TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK… On the plus side for CSUMB Saturday, the Otters committed just 10 turnovers at San Marcos, their second best day of the season and the fewest committed since turning the ball over nine times in the season opener at Fresno Pacific (Nov. 14).

VARTAZARIAN ON TOP 10 PACE… Sylvia Vartazarian continued the strong start to her Otter career with a game–high 18 points Saturday at San Marcos. If she continues on her current pace, she will finish the regular season with 327 points. That would be good for No. 10 on the Otter single–season scoring list.

PARKER PASSES FRANKA… Junior Camille Parker continued her penchant for thievery by collecting two more steals Saturday at San Marcos. She now has 30 for the season and 75 for her career, passing Natalie Franka (2004–07) for 16th place on the CSUMB career steals list. She needs two more to move past McKenna Hill (2014–17) into 15th place.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Sylvia Vartazarian 18; REBOUNDS: Sylvia Vartazarian 9; ASSISTS: Chyna Dews/Siana Fields 2; BLOCKS: Siana Fields 1; STEALS: Camille Parker 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 3–game trip to kickoff 2020 by heading to Hayward for the first leg of the Battle of the Bays. Doubleheader action begins with the women's game at 1 p.m. The men will tip–off at 3 p.m.
