Fire And Ice Start Leads East Bay Past Otters, 79–66

Sylvia Vartazarian scores 17; Katie Fitzgerald adds 14 and four steals

HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State East Bay played the first half on fire, Cal State Monterey Bay came out ice cold, and that was enough to lift the Pioneers to a 79–66 victory Saturday afternoon in Pioneer Gym.

Junior Sylvia Vartazarian (Glendale HS/Glendale College) overcame early foul trouble to score 15 of her team–high 17 points in the second half. The Otter also got double–digit scoring efforts from freshman Katie Fitzgerald (Mater Dei HS) with 14 points, and junior Camille Parker (Alta Loma HS) with 11.

CSUMB started the game shooting 2–for 13 from the floor while getting out–rebounded 15–4 as the Pioneers opened a 19–7 lead after one quarter. Things didn't get much better in the second as East Bay put up an 11–1 edge on the glass.

On the other end of the floor, the Pioneers unlocked the CSUMB defense to shoot 10–for–13 in the second quarter while opening a 45–19 halftime lead. CSUMB sorted things out after the break, opening the third quarter with a 12–0 run to climb back to within 14 points. But that was as close as the Otters would get until a late Parker free throw made the final margin 13.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… a Morgan Greene jumper made it 76–60 East Bay with 2:30 left to play.

SECOND HALF SPARK… After shooting just 7–of–27 (.259) from the field in the first half, the Otters shot a season–best 15–for–27 (.556) from the floor in the second half. That allowed them to out–score East Bay 47–34 over the final 20 minutes.

FINISHING WITH FLAIR… Thanks to their hot–shooting after intermission, the Otters scored 27 points in the fourth quarter. That marked their best quarter of the season. Their 47 points in the second half were their post in any half since scoring 49 in the second half against Holy Names University on Nov. 20, 2016.

A LITTLE WINDEX, PLEASE… The Otters entered Saturday's game a solid team on the boards, out–rebounding their opponents five times in the first 11 games with a defensive rebounding average ranked fourth in the CCAA. But that didn't help the Otters clean the glass at East Bay. CSUMB's 15 total rebounds were the fewest in program history and just the third time ever they didn't pull down at least 21 rebounds in a game. The previous record was 18 rebounds against Cal Poly Pomona on Feb. 7, 2009.

PARKER TIES HILL ON STEALS LIST… Junior forward Camille Parker claimed her 29th steal of the season and the 76th of her career to pull into a tie with McKenna Hill (2014–17) for the No. 15 spot on the CSUMB career steals list. Next up are Jenna Bandy (2011–15) and Lisa Mispley (2003–04) with 82 steals apiece.

SEASON–HIGH STEALS FOR FITZGERALD… Speaking of thievery, Katie Fitzgerald took a season–high four steals Saturday at East Bay.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Sylvia Vartazarian 17; REBOUNDS: Siana Fields 4; ASSISTS: Chyna Dews/Katie Fitzgerald 3; BLOCKS: Katie Fitzgerald/Sylvia Vartazarian 1; STEALS: Katie Fitzgerald 4.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of The Kelp Bed to begin the second round of CCAA play by hosting Sonoma State Thursday (Jan. 16). The women will tip–off at 5:30 p.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
