Cold Weather Brings Cold Shooting As Otters Fall To Sonoma

Sylvia Vartazarian scores 14 points, Camille Parker grabs 11 boards

SEASIDE, Calif. — The cold front moving through the Monterey Bay area took its toll inside The Kelp Bed Thursday night as CSUMB shot a season–low 21.7 percent from the floor in a 73–45 loss to Sonoma State.

The Otters got 11 points from junior Sylvia Vartazarian (Glendale HS/Glendale College) and a season–high 11 rebounds from fellow junior Camille Parker (Alta Loma HS). Senior Siana Fields (Long Beach Poly) added three steals.

Chyna Dews (Venice HS) made a 3–pointer on CSUMB's second possession to give the Otters their only lead of the night. Sonoma responded with a 14–2 run to go up 16–5. Sonoma gradually increased its advantage from there.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… a Serena Santos 3–pointer gave Sonoma a 59–33 lead with 6:47 to play.

EPICALLY COLD… CSUMB's season–low team shooting percentage (13–60, .217) came in large part due to a third quarter in which the Otters went 0–for–14 from the field. All four Otter points in the period came from the free–throw line.

BACK ON THE REBOUND… Camille Parker renewed her assault on the on rebounding record book by matching her own team season–high of 11 Thursday versus Sonoma State. She now has 367 career rebounds and needs 13 more to pass Alexa Sperling (2015–18) for No. 9 on the CSUMB all–time list.

ABOUT AVERAGE… Sylvia Vartazarian scored right at her season average of 14 points Thursday versus Sonoma State. She entered the night ranked No. 5 in the CCAA scoring race.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Sylvia Vartazarian 14; REBOUNDS: Camille Parker 11; ASSISTS: Katie Fitzgerald/Camille Parker 2; BLOCKS: Siana Fields 2; STEALS: Siana Fields 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will wrap up their brief 2–game homestand by hosting San Francisco State Saturday afternoon. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader.
