Otters Pull Away Early In 70–41 Rout Of S.F. State

Freshman Lizzy Benton leads a balanced effort with 14 points, two blocks and two steals

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay pulled away early and never let San Francisco State get within sniffing distance of the lead to earn its most lopsided win of the season with a 70–41 victory Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

Credit for the win belonged to the entire team as everybody pitched in Saturday. Freshman Lizzy Benton (Thousand Oaks HS) came off the bench to lead a balanced offense with 14 points. Junior forward Camille Parker (Alta Loma HS) was up to her old tricks on the glass, grabbed a team season–high 14 rebounds.

CSUMB opened the game with a 19–6 run that put the Gators in a big hole early. The lead got to 20 two minutes into the second quarter via a Serena Toney (Seattle/Roosevelt HS) layup. SFSU never got closer than 19 points the rest of the way.

In addition to Benton and Parker, junior Sylvia Vartazarian (Glendale HS/Glendale College) chipped in an 11–point, 11–rebound double–double. Freshman Katie Fitzgerald (Mater Dei HS) scored 13 points and Toney finished with 10.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… a Camille Parker free throw with 7:18 remaining put the Otters on top, 57–33.

TAKING OFFENSE… CSUMB's 70–point outburst in Saturday's win over San Francisco State was its biggest scoring day since putting up 74 in a win over — you guessed it, San Francisco State — on Feb. 16, 2019.

SYLVIA JOINS THE DOUBLE–DOUBLE CLUB… Sylvia Vartazarian became the second Otter to record a double–double this season by finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds in Saturday's win over San Francisco State. Camille Parker was the first member of that exclusive club with a 12–point, 11–rebound performance versus Cal Poly Pomona on Nov. 23.

PARKER PASSES SPERLING ON REBOUND CHART… Camille Parker's team season–high 14 rebounds in Saturday's win over San Francisco State moved her past Alexa Sperling 2015–18 and into the No. 9 slot on the Otter career rebounding list with 381. She needs 36 more to pass Julie Heurung (416) for eighth place.

BENTON SPARKLES ON BOTH ENDS… Not only did freshman Lizzy Benton shine on offense with a game–high 14 points, she also sparkled on the defense end of the floor. Benton led the Otter defense with two blocks and two steals Saturday.

'TIS BETTER TO GIVE… The Otters passed 14 assists and committed just 12 turnovers in Saturday's win over San Francisco State. It marks the first time since the season opener at Fresno Pacific that CSUMB has recorded more turnovers than assists in a game.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Lizzy Benton 14; REBOUNDS: Camille Parker 14; ASSISTS: Four Otters 3; BLOCKS: Lizzy Benton 2; STEALS: Lizzy Benton.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm proud of the effort the ladies gave today. We were in need of a win to show ourselves that we can execute and compete. It was nice to see the production from the bench. They worked for it and deserved this win." – CSUMB Head Coach CJ Pace

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for their (geographically) longest trip of the season next weekend. The 2–game swing begins Thursday (Jan. 23) at Stanislaus State. The women will tip–off at 5:30 p.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
