Toney’s Big Game Can’t Carry Otters In Loss At Stanislaus

Serena Toney scores a career–high 22 in 75-66 setback

TURLOCK, Calif. — A career–high 22 points from sophomore Serena Toney (Seattle/Roosevelt HS) led Cal State Monterey Bay, but wasn't enough to overcome a hot–shooting night from host Stanislaus State, which earned a 75–56 win Thursday night in Fitzpatrick Arena.

Stanislaus shot 50 percent from beyond the arc while making an Otter opponent season–high 12 treys. That allowed the Warriors to build an 18–point lead by halftime. A Toney jumper got the Otters to within 11 early in the fourth quarter, but that is as close as they would get.

In addition to her 22 points, Toney also pulled down a game and career–high eight rebounds. Freshman Lizzy Benton (Thousand Oaks HS) came off the bench to add 10 points and two blocks.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… a Brittney Livingston 3–pointer made it 65–45 in favor of the Warriors with 4:32 to play.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Not only were Serena Toney's 22 points a career high, it marked the first 20–point game of her young career. She is the fourth Otter to score 20 or more points in a game this season, joining Sylvia Vartazarian (three times), Katie Fitzgerald and Camille Parker (once each).

ON THE BLOCKS… Lizzy Benton is far from the tallest player on the Otter roster (in fact, she ranks sixth amongst 11 players), but she is playing bigger than her 5–9 height. She led the Otters with two blocks Thursday at Stanislaus after blocking a team season–high three Saturday against San Francisco State. She is the first Otter to block two or more shots in a game twice this season.

ON THE BLOCKS, PART II… Led by Lizzy Benton, the Otters blocked a team season–high five shots Thursday at Stanislaus State.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Serena Toney 22; REBOUNDS: Serena Toney 8; ASSISTS: Chyna Dews 4; BLOCKS: Lizzy Benton 2; STEALS: Siana Fields 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will conclude their longest (geographically) CCAA road trip of the season Saturday with a doubleheader Saturday at Humboldt State. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
