Tough Night For Otters On The North Coast As Humboldt Wins

Camille Parker scores career–high 18 in 81–55 defeat

ARCATA, Calif. — Saturday turned out to be one of those nights for the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team as Humboldt State used a suffocating defense to earn an 81–55 win in Lumberjack Arena.

CSUMB led wire–to–wire in winning the first meeting of the season last month in The Kelp Bed. A repeat appeared to be in the works as the Otters led for much of the first quarter.

But the Lumberjacks opened the second quarter with runs of 12–0 and 16–2 to take complete control. Humboldt put the defense clamps on by forcing 24 Otter turnovers to quash any hopes of a CSUMB comeback.

On the bright side for CSUMB, Camille Parker (Alta Loma HS) and Sylvia Vartazarian (Glendale HS) flirted with double–doubles. Parker finished with a career–high 18 points and eight rebounds. Vartazarian added 10 points and eight boards of her own.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Sandin Kinder knocked down a 3–pointer to give Humboldt a 72–49 lead with 4:15 remaining.

PARKER GOES HIGH… A hat–tip to Camille Parker for her career–high 18–point performance Saturday at Humboldt State. She eclipsed her previous career high of 16 points scored against Cal State East Bay on Dec. 30, 2018.

PARKER NEARS 400 BOARDS… With right rebounds Saturday at Humboldt State, Camille Parker moved to within seven rebounds of 400 for her career. She currently sits ninth on the CSUMB career rebounding chart with 393. She needs 24 to pass Julie Heurung for for eighth place.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Camille Parker 18; REBOUNDS: Camille Parker/Sylvia Vartazarian 8; ASSISTS: Chyna Dews/Katie Fitzgerald 3; BLOCKS: Sylvia Vartazarian 1; STEALS: Sylvia Vartazarian 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… A light week is on tap for the Otters, whose lone opponent will be Chico State. The Wildcats will visit for a doubleheader matinee Saturday (Feb. 1). The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
