Otters Never Trail, Complete Season Sweep Of Humboldt

Andrew Ferguson scores 19, Jahvon Johnson scores 18 in 76–72 victory

ARCATA, Calif. — A game in which it never trailed still went down to the wire as Cal State Monterey Bay gutted out a 76–72 win at Humboldt Saturday night in Lumberjack Arena. With the win, the Otters completed a season sweep of Humboldt State.

CSUMB never trailed but never led by more than 10 points in an entertaining affair that wasn't in the bank until Damian Wilson (Inglewood/Taft HS) made a pair of free throws with 1.5 seconds remaining to set the final score.

Sophomore forward Andrew Ferguson (Perth, Western Australia/Univ. of San Diego) and senior guard Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) led the offense with 19 and 18 points respectively. Ferguson added six rebounds, a block and a steal while Johnson chipped in five assists.

They were far from the only Otter heros in this game as CSUMB received strong performances from several others. Wilson finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. Joseph Bosetti (Red Bluff HS) had nine points and a game–high eight rebounds.

The Otters threatened to pull away several times, but each time they got the lead in the eight to 10 point range, Humboldt made plays to draw close. The Lumberjacks caught CSUMB just once, at 58–58 with 8:08 remaining. But the Otters responded with consecutive 3–pointers by Tommy Kramer (Amador Valley HS) and Ferguson to restore a 6–point lead.

Humboldt had a chance to tie on its final possession, but the CSUMB defense forced a turnover, leading to Wilson's game–sealing free throws.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Damian Wilson's clutch free throws made it 76–72 with 1.5 seconds remaining.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… With Saturday's 76–72 victory, the Otters pulled off their second–ever season sweep of Humboldt State. CSUMB also won 76–71 in The Kelp Bed on Dec. 7. The only other time the Otters swept the Lumberjacks came during the 2013–14 season.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE ROAD… The Otters are becoming quite comfortable playing away from The Kelp Bed. After losing 26 consecutive road games dating back to 2017, CSUMB has won two of its last three away from home (and the third game was a 1–point defeat).

ON THE REBOUND… The Otters continued their strong play on the boards Saturday night at Humboldt State, out–rebounding the Lumberjacks 38–24. It marks the fifth consecutive game CSUMB has out–rebounded its opponent. It also marked the fourth time the Otters have out–rebounded their opponents by a double–digit margin.

FROM DOWNTOWN… The Otters made 10 3–pointers (in 21 attempts) in Saturday night's 76–72 win at Humboldt State. It marked the 11th time CSUMB has made 10 or more 3–pointers in 20 games this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Andrew Ferguson 19; REBOUNDS: Joseph Bosetti 8; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson 5; BLOCKS: Andrew Ferguson/Mike Johnson/Damian Wilson 1; STEALS: Andrew Ferguson 1.

THE LAST WORD… "The way the guys bounced back tonight after a brutal loss Thursday at Stanislaus was incredible. The fact that they could win on the road, in a tough environment, says everything you need to know about their character." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… A light week is on tap for the Otters, whose lone opponent will be Chico State. The Wildcats will visit for a doubleheader matinee Saturday (Feb. 1). The men will tip-off at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
