Otters Pull Off The Shocker, Stun No. 22 UCSD, 59–58

Sylvia Vartazarian scores 20 points again as Otter pick up first road win of the season

LA JOLLA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay came up with its biggest women's basketball win in several years by stunning No. 22 ranked UC San Diego 59–58 Thursday night in RIMAC Arena. It marked CSUMB's first win over a nationally–ranked opponent since the 2012–13 season.

The Otters got 20 points and nine rebounds—both game highs—from junior forward Sylvia Vartazarian (Glendale HS/Glendale College). Sophomore Chyna Dews (Venice HS) scored 13 points before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter. Freshman Katie Fitzgerald (Mater Dei HS) added 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.

CSUMB led by as many as 10 points in the first half and carried a 9–point lead (33–24) into the break. UCSD responded with a big third quarter that saw the Tritons take a 48–44 lead into the final stanza.

Trailing 50–44 with seven minutes remaining, Dews brought the Otters back by draining a three, grabbing a rebound, then nailing another three to tie the game at 50–50 shortly before picking up her fifth foul.

A crafty baseline move by Kim McKinney (Carrollton, Ga./East Georgia State) erased the final Triton lead of the night, tying the game at 56. Fitzgerald then gave CSUMB the lead for good by kissing a runner off the glass with 2:16 remaining.

UCSD had a final chance to win in the closing seconds, but Sydney Sharp's short runner didn't go and Holly Wood (Las Vegas, Nev.//Foothill HS) grabbed the rebound to seal the win.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Holly Wood secured the rebound on Sydney Sharp's last second attempt as the clock struck zeros.

GIANT KILLERS… CSUMB's win over No. 22 ranked UCSD was its first against a ranked opponent since a 51–44 win at then No. 9 Chico State on Jan. 25, 2013.

ANOTHER 20–POINTER FOR SYLVIA… By scoring a game–high 20 points in Thursday's win at UCSD, Sylvia Vartazarian reached the 20–point mark for the third time in her last four games. She is the first Otter to accomplish that feat since Aubri Smith did it four times in a row from Nov. 11–18, 2017.

MORE DOUBLE TROUBLE FOR FITZGERALD… With 10 points in Thursday's win at UCSD, Katie Fitzgerald has scored in double figures in eight of her first 10 collegiate games. She is the first freshman in Otter women's basketball history to accomplish that feat.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Sylvia Vartazarian 20; REBOUNDS: Sylvia Vartazarian 9; ASSISTS: Katie Fitzgerald/Camille Parker 3; BLOCKS: Sylvia Vartazarian 1; STEALS: Chyna Dews/Katie Fitzgerald 3.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm proud of the ladies and their resiliency. Tonight definitely was a teaching moment in so many ways. We will enjoy this one for the night and get ready for a very physical and tough San Marcos team Saturday afternoon." – CSUMB Head Coach CJ Pace

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their brief trip to America's finest City with a doubleheader Saturday at Cal State San Marcos. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. while the men are slated for a 3 p.m. tip.
