Honberger Leads Otters To Split On Day 2 At Concordia

Otters beat Western Oregon in four; fall to Metro State in three

PORTLAND, Ore. — Freshman Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) became the latest Otter youngster to step up as Cal State Monterey Bay split a pair of matches Saturday to conclude play at the Concordia Volleyball Classic. The Otters defeated Western Oregon 25–23, 15–25, 25–14, 25–18 before falling to Metro State 25–21, 25–14, 25–20.

Honberger posted her first collegiate double–double in the early match versus Western Oregon. She collected 12 kills and 12 digs while adding a block and a pair of aces. She led all attackers with 14 kills in the finale against Metro.

After winning a close first set and fading late in the second, the Otters roared back to dispatch WOU handily. In the late match, Metro scored three of the final five points to take a tight opener before pulling away late in the next two sets to close the sweep.

THE WESTERN OREGON MATCH WAS OVER WHENKaylie Honberger served six consecutive points to give the Otters and 8–3 lead early in the fourth set. CSUMB never let the Wolves back into the set or the match.

THE METRO STATE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… A Kayla White kill broke a 14–14 tie in the third set. Metro State eased away from there to seal the win.

SPREADING THE WEALTH… With 12 kills in Saturday's opener versus Western Oregon, Kaylie Honberger became the fifth Otter to reach double–digit kills through the first three matches. Jenna Tobin has turned the trick twice. Hannah Haveman, Mollin Helfrich and Baylie Pierson have each done it once.

DIG THIS… Freshman libero Madi Lombardi is off to a quick start to her collegiate career, collecting double–digit digs in each of her first three matches. She had 29 in the opener versus Concordia–Portland and is averaging a healthy 4.8 digs per set.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Kaylie Honberger 28.5; KILLS: Kaylie Honberger 26; BLOCKS: Hannah Haveman 5; ACES: Alexa Blunt/Kaylie Honberger/Jenna Tobin 2; DIGS: Madi Lombardi 28.

THE LAST WORD… "Overall I was really pleased with this weekend. Everyone contributed for us and it was awesome to have the depth and the confidence in that depth. We have a lot of things to work on and that's what preseason is for. We have a really dynamic group of hitters and when they choose to work in transition, good things happen. We have to serve and pass better, and we will. I love the direction this young team is headed." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue pre–CCAA play at the West Region Crossover Tournament next week at Cal Poly Pomona. Tournament play begins for the Otters against defending NCAA runner–up Western Washington Thursday (Sept. 12) at 10 a.m.
